Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2010 Announced

CANTON, OHIO – Guard Russ Grimm, linebacker Rickey Jackson, cornerback Dick LeBeau, running back Floyd Little, defensive tackle John Randle, wide receiver Jerry Rice, and running back Emmitt Smith make up the Class of 2010 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinees.

The seven-man class was elected by the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Selection Committee who met today in South Florida. The newest members of the Hall were selected from a list of 17 finalists who had been determined earlier by the committee.

Grimm was a steadying force of the Washington Redskins’ offensive line known as “The Hogs.” The standout guard earned All-NFL acclaim and Pro Bowl trips four consecutive seasons.

Jackson helped turn the Saints from perennial losers to a playoff contender and becomes the first long-time player from the team to be elected to the Hall of Fame. He was named first-team All-NFL four times in his career.

LeBeau, was originally drafted by the Cleveland Browns but cut, joined the Lions shortly thereafter. He went on to enjoy a 14-year career that saw him intercept 62 passes. That total currently ranks third all-time among cornerbacks.

Little, the first 1,000-yard rusher in Denver Broncos history, was a versatile star who amassed more than 12,000 all-purpose yards on rushing, receiving, punt returns, and kickoff returns during his nine-season career.

Randle, a seven-time Pro Bowler and six-time All-Pro pick, amassed 137.5 sacks during his career with the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks. A member of the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s, he played in 219 career games.

Rice played an amazing 20 seasons and owns virtually every major receiving record. In all, he caught 1,549 passes for 22,895 yards and scored a total of 208 touchdowns.

Smith is the NFL’s all-time leading rusher with 18,355 yards and scored a record 164 rushing touchdowns. He won four NFL rushing titles and gained 1,000 yards in a record 11 straight seasons.

The 2010 class will increase to 260 the number of all-time greats permanently honored in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Enshrinement of the Class of 2010 will take place at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. ET. The Enshrinement Ceremony will be televised live by both ESPN and the NFL Network.

The annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game that kicks off the NFL’s preseason will be played on Sunday, August 8, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. and broadcast live by NBC. Teams have not yet been announced.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival is a 10-day celebration of the enshrinement of the newest Hall of Fame Class.

Held in Canton each year, the festival includes 19 special public events and culminates with the Enshrinement Ceremony and Hall of Fame Game. Two other major events are the Enshrinees Dinner (Friday, August 6), and the Enshrinees GameDay Roundtable (Sunday, August 8). It is at the Enshrinees Dinner where each member of the Class of 2010 will be presented his gold Pro Football Hall of Fame Jacket. At the GameDay Roundtable, the members of the Class of 2010 will be featured center stage to share memories of the game and their personal feelings about being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Also, for the first time fans were invited to vote this year for their choice for the Pro Football Hall of Fame with the VanHeusen Pro Football Hall of Fame Fan’s Choice.

As a football fan i think that a guy who is statistically behind Jerry Rice as the all time best receiver needs to be in.     I'm a hardcore Dolphin fan and am good with those who got in this year. The lack of kicer/punters is blatently wrong! The hall should honor every aspect of the NFL. Last i checked, a kicker and punter are part of that. On a personal note as a dolphin fan, Richmond Webb was a all-pro for Marino for over a decade. He wasn't even chosen for the original list. Why?

    It's becoming even more of a joke and shame to Pro Football to continue seeing these modern day,well-off players get pre-mature enshrinements. The HOF and NFL need to fix this and stop screwing more and more of the yester-year deserving great players who need it much more than the over-paid modern day players right now. This is just an example of the HALL and the NFL thinking only about Marketing instead of actually taking care of the yester-year players who played the game for the love of the game for alot less to help build the NFL into the cash cow it is now. there should be no modern day era players on these ballads period. as much as these modern day players are HOF material, its sickening to continuously see them dominating the ballads for marketing purposes while some of the deserving pioneers of the league get buried....The purpose is to recognize those players from the past, not one's that havent even been retired 10 yrs.

    The HOF is a crock. I agree with those who say that Players and Coaches should be the voters to their ranks. Maybe someone should have asked LeBeau if he wanted to go in as a Steeler or Lion? I wonder which he would have chosen? At any rate, pity the teams like Denver who should have more, pity the teams like the Steelers who, while they have tons, have an artificial limit placed on them so it will be difficult to get in. The HOF should be about what they did on the field, not what team they're from or any other reason.I'll never take my football-fanatic kids to the Hall. It would be hypocrisy on my part. The Hall has become a joke.

    Gosh, how could Charles Haley not get in? He is the only person alive with 5 rings that were won as a player. Ask anyone on those 5 championship teams if they would have won thoe rings without Haley. A lot of stuff not about football has been written, but go back and look at the stuff he did when they strapped the pads on. He was the ultimate warrior who would have played for no pay.

    I dont think its right to have modern day era players put on the ballad. no offense to deserving greats like Rice,Smith,Woodson, but way too soon since they have only been away from the game since 2004. This is what continues to happen with good players who deserve to be in from 20+ yrs ago.....I think it should be a guideline that a player must be at least 15yrs retired to be eligible. That would keep the good yester-year players from constantly being overlooked by ignorant writers and fans voting.

    Cris Carter and Tim Brown will get in. Ken Stabler should get in as well. There are many worthy Superbowl winning QBS out there, not getting in more then likely because of Interceptions thrown. Stablers numbers in Houston and N.O. hurt him. Ray Guy SHould be in. It seems to be harder for receivers to get in. Look how long it took for Art Monk to get in. Cliff Branch should be in for that matter. So should Drew Pearson just look at their playoff stats, and what they meant to their respective teams. The Snake pulled alot of games out of the fire. Floyd Little getting in shocks me. SInce you put Floyd Little in that makes the case for Terrell Davis being in even stronger. You also have to look at Clem Daniels. Little getting in makes a strong case for alot of Running backs not in the hall of fame.

    For those of you that think John Randle should not be in the Hall, you dont know anything about football.137 sacks as an iterior linemen. Thats the most EVER for an interior linemen. Almost 50 more than Warren Sapp. And for Chris Carter to not get in??? After Rice, he could be in the arguement for the second best WR with a few others. Guess he made some people mad over the years.

    The HOF. They need to fix it. When a player up for the HOF let the writers do there voting for the first year. Then in the second year let those who are in the HOF. Do the voting to see if your in. You are a HOF player or your not. So you should only get two chances to get in and after that you can't.

    Great to see LeBeau finally go his due recognition for his playing career. He should get in again for his accomplishments as a coach as well. How the heck Demontti Dawson didn't get in his 1st or 2nd yr of eligibility is beyond me, his stats outshine many already in the hall and several who made it this year. Come on voters he made more pro bowls and all pro teams and was considered the premier center of his time. L.C. Greenwood is another Steeler overlooked. I think because they are so many Steelers already in that the others who are deserving are getting the short end of the stick. We can't help it if we have so many good teams and so many good players. If they deserve to be in they should be in PERIOD!

    My only snub I think is Charles Haley. He is the ONLY player to have 5 Super Bowl rings. That fact alone should be his golden ticket. I also agree that the writers and fans should NOT vote for the HOF. It should be voted on by the players and coaches. Charles will get in but I can't say when. I think he might have made it in this year if Rice and Smith had not taken two spots away from the rest of the finalists.

    HOF voting always ignores GREAT players who happen to play for a lousy team. CORTEZ KENNEDY was All Pro 8 times and in 1992 was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year on a 2-14 team! If he played for Dallas or the 49ers during that same time he would have been in the Hall the first year eligible. He also made the All-Decade Team for the 1990's... It's not about TALENT for the Hall of Fame, it's about what team you play on. He only made it to one playoff game and he was double-teamed on every play in every year. Tez needs to be in the HOF.

    HOF voting always ignores GREAT players who happen to play for a lousy team. CORTEZ KENNEDY was All Pro 8 times and in 1992 was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year on a 2-14 team! If he played for Dallas or the 49ers during that same time he would have been in the Hall the first year eligible. He also made the All-Decade Team for the 1990's... It's not about TALENT for the Hall of Fame, it's about what team you play on. He only made it to one playoff game and he was double-teamed on every play in every year. Tez needs to be in the HOF.

    I cannot believe that Charles Haley was denied HOF entry. No doubt this was due to his off field antics at times, and not his on field play. He was a game changer of the highest sort. Is it just a coincidence that when the Cowboys got Haley in a trade with the 49ers they became Super Bowl champs? I think not.

    I, for one, think the HoF is getting too lacks in their enshrinements. When I think of the Hall, I want the best ever at their positions. Players whose names will be remembered for all time coast to coast, not just in their hometown. I thought there were only five deserving players this year: Rice, E. Smith, Sharp, Grimm and LeBeau. Sorry Jackson being the best defensive player on the Saints doesn't impress me, nor does Floyd Little, but I am not from Denver and was not alive during the 60's. Just my opinion, I think people are getting in who don't deserve it and people are being kept out that do and that is wrong.

    Congrats to Russ Grimm, he had a nice career. a year or two ago Randal McDaniel got in, he had a nice career also. But how can they put any offensive linemen in the HOF especially a guard until they put in JERRY KRAMER. The man was on the NFL's 75th anniversary team, the Super Bowl 40th anniversary team, multiple years voted to the Pro Bowl and All-Pro teams as well as having made the most famous block in football history. And he's not in, not nominated, not mentioned.....nothing. That's sad!!!

    Congratulations to the seven well deserving players elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame Floyd Little ,Dick Lebeau,Jerry Rick Emmitt Smith,Russ Grimm,John Randle and Rickey Jackson. Also congradulations to the other ten players that were nominated but did not get in this time Dawson,Haley,Brown, Sharpe, Coryell,Dent ,Kennedy,Reed,Carter and Craig. You all had great careers and deserve to ben in some day. Five minutes after Kurt Warner retires and everyone want to debate wether or not he should go into the Hall Of Fame. I my opinion there go far to many players that have waited too many years to get in that we should be talking about. One in particular is Tommy Nobis. In eleven professional seasons he led the Falcons in tackles nine times, went to five Pro Bowls (one in 1972 after two knee surgeries), was named All-Pro twice and was chosen for the NFL's All-Decade Team for the 1960's. He was the second best linebacker in the 1960's next to Dick Butkus and should be in the Hall of Fame. Too many good player from losing teams are not in in as well. The NFL should reward the players from the past more than they do now. I'm not saying that Jerry Rice and Emit Smith shouldn't get in right away because they should. I am say that the procedure for recognizing past mistakes needs to change in order get the more and the most deserving players into the NFL Hall of Fame. The way I understand The Senior Committee nominate veteran players and then they get put in the same process as the modern day player. They restrict the senior player to only two players. Why restrict deserving players down to only two?Floyd Little waited 30 years and he wasn't the most deserving. Tommy Nobis, Jerry Kramer,Claude Humphrey and many others are not borderline players. Mistakes were made in the past because of the too restrictive policies, mostly from the 1960's 70' and 80's. All I am saying it is time to recognize those mistakes. Here is a parttial list of the player that have been forgotten and shoul be in the hall of Fame.     Every year there are "snubs", a lot of great players who have to wait at least one more year for the honor of being a Hall of Famer. I agree that Cris Carter is deserving, but let's put the #1 receiver of all-time in first and I believe the floodgates of receivers and tight ends will start. The only real disagreement with other posters I have is Ed "Too Tall" Jones. I don't believe he belongs in the Hall just because he played for the Cowboys. Harvey Martin and Randy White were both superior players on his own team. Jones never led in anything that I can remember. Although I do like his "Geico" ad!

When voters like Paul Zimmerman makes comments like "I will never vote for Ken Stabler as long as I'm alive", it tarnishes the Hall and is not fair to the well deserving players who wait year after year only to be denied by a writer that feel all empowered by his mighty pen. I believe if the players voted the outcome would be fair and more accepted by fans and players alike.

    I am having trouble understanding Floyd Little's induction. I would not question his qualifications for the hall if not for the fact that Terrell Davis is said to not be a HOF"er due to his short career. He has better numbers than Floyd or Gale Sayers. Why does the HOF punish a man for injuries. Sayers made it. If Gale Sayers is in then Terrell Davis should be enshrined and so should Sterling Sharpe. The man averaged 1120 yards and 9 touchdowns per season. He would have easily surpassed 1000 receptions had his career not been ended by injury. I hope in the future the HOF voters realize that Davis is deserving and that they have the class to enshrine the Sharpe brothers in the same year. These young men are a true american success story and should be honored in the HOF as they have earned that right. Thank you

You may be bronco haters and thats fine, but there is no dening that sharpe and little were two of the graetest players of their time and once again sharpe was robbed. Yeah sharpe had a lot to say when he was on the feild, but he was one player that could back up his trash talk and make a defense pay the price in the process. To say that sharpe isn,t in the same leauge as gonzolez is rediculouse? Sharpe is a true example of what a tight end should be.

    People should stop looking at the "Pro Bowl" stats and focus on "All Pro" stats. It is MUCH EASIER to make a Pro Bowl roster than to be named first-team All Pro. A player can be the 6th best WR in the league and be named to a Pro Bowl roster, but you must be the BEST in the entire league to be named All Pro. Since we are talking HOF, we should focus on the BEST of the BEST, which means "All Pro". Making a Pro Bowl roster means that the player was "pretty good" that year, but Canton is not the "Hall of Pretty Good". This explains why Rickey Jackson and John Randle made the HOF this year; their All Pro stats are very impressive. According to this measure, we should see Dermonti Dawson get in soon, and it explains why LeBeau had to wait so long, but I was glad to see him in the HOF because of his combined contribution as a player and a defensive mastermind that extends over 50 years in the NFL. Congrats to all!

    I voted in the jc penney polls. Three of the ones I voted for got in! Congradulations to all who got in. It is a great honor to be nominated to say the least. I do think however that Richard Dent should have gotten in to the HOF. I voted for him and expected him to get in. I also voted for Ed "too tall" Jones. I think he should have gotten in as well. I didnt vote for Emmett Smith because I figured his name would definately come up again and he would eventually get in. Some of the nominees that got nominated may not get nominated next year. I dont think we should be looking at the voting process but the nominating process instead. All of these players deserve the nod to get into the HOF. Again. Congradulations to the enshrinees.

    Dent should definitely be in by now, how can they keep passing him up. Look at his stats, and the impact he made on one of the best defenses in NFL history. Dawson should be in as well. All the Broncos fans are wanting Sharpe to get in, but Mecklenburg should go first. Congrats to Rice, Smith, Grimm and Jackson, all very deserving of a bust in Canton. Randle, Little and LeBeau were also great, but Dent was has HOF credentials any way you look at it.

Why place someone in with one of those 5 nominations when you can wait a couple of years and they will be a slam dunk senior choice.     Rice and Smith were obvious first timers. Randle, Jackson and Grimm were all deserving nominees. As for Andre Reed sorry folks he is probably going to sit for a long time. The WR/TE position is the one with the most depth when you conisider the caliber of candidate that is already waiting or will soon be eligable (LT will soon have such a large log jam). To get enshrined he has to get past Cris Carter, Tim Brown and Shannon Sharpe who all have better claims than he does and then get past Marvin Harrison, Keyshawn Johnson, Jimmy Smith and Rod Smith who have already retired and Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Isaac Bruce, Chad Johnson, Torry Holt, Heinz Ward, Tony Gonzales and Antonio Gates all heading towards the twilight of their careers. That is without the competition from other positions and he could easily up only getting in as a senior nominee.

Floyd had 0 All-Afl/All-Pro linemen blocking for him. Floyd, in his 9 year career took hand offs and caught passes from 27 different QB's. Jim Brown has OL who blocked for him in the HoF (4), as do O.J. (2), Jim Perry (3). Floyd Little? Come on, name one OL who blocked for him during his career who was all-anything. Matter of fact, name one Offensive Player who played with Floyd who was all-anything. You cannot because there were none. Floyd was called "The Franchise" because that is what he was. The Denver Broncos were getting ready to move to Birmingham, AL. Floyd kept them in Denver because at least Floyd was fun to watch. Fans loved him and still, after all these years still do.     I think all of the new enshrinees deserve it, but the committee really needs to get with it and elect a few players into the HOF. Shannon Sharpe needs to be there; Cris Carter needs to be there on his first ballot; Ray Guy is the only punter who should be there; and the biggest travesty of all is that Cliff branch is not in the HOF. The guy was light years better than Michael Irvin who's in; Branch has better career numbers than either John Stallworth or Lynn Swann, both of whom are in; Branch's playoff numbers are better than the Steeler pair's too. And he won 3 rings. His career average of 17.6 yards per catch is unreal and hall-worthy. His playoff yards per catch average is over 21. What will it take?

    you GOT to be kidding me? How can you say that a player like Chris Carter isnt in the HOF? Granted I am a Vikings Fan and have been all my life being from northen Minnesota but he was at retirement 2nd in td rec and I believe 2nd in rec for a WR and after countless times been looked over for the HOF he should have been inducted this year even though he should have been inducted when he was 1st eligible......I am not only a fan of the Vikings but a fan of the NFL and I think that it will do a very big injustice that we hold him out of the NFL HOF next year.

    First of all I would like to congratulate the entire Class of 2010, each man is very deserving and I am glad that the senior players are being recognized. I am however very disappointed that Charles Haley and Richard Dent were once again snubbed. Haley is the only player in the history of the NFL to have EARNED 5 Super Bowl rings, and Dent played 15 seasons, had 137.5 sacks in the 203 games played not to mention he was one of the few defensive players to win an MVP in a Super Bowl. I sure hope the voters get it right next year and get these two amazing players into the Hall, they are more than deserving.

    From someone who watches this very closely every year it seems that there are difinitely players out there who are not getting the respect that they deserve. Sharpe, Carter, Brown all deserve to be there. Richard Dent should be there. I can't wait to see who is excluded next year!!

    I was stunned that none of the "experts" on television didnt mention Cris Carter as a definite selection for the 2010 hall of fame class. As well as Shannon Sharp; i guess the hall of fame doesnt respect tight ends. I am also amazed that Tim Brown hasn't been selected. I believe Tim Brown will be another Art Monk. He'll keep getting passed up for senior candidates who dont truely deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. I'm still blown away that Micheal Irvin got in as soon as he did. I believe that is a product of being on the Cowboys in the 90's. Lastly, im going to give a shout out to RICHARD DENT. I feel bad for Richard because he definitely deserves to be in after 20 years. LITTLE got in? I'm happy for him but he reminds me of a Brian Westbrook, and i dont think Westbrook will get in even though he'll have better numbers at teh end of his career.

    I'm from Green Bay and not a Vikings fan at all, but how did Floyd Little get in with only 1- 1,000 yard season over Chris Carter and Tim Brown, whom passed the thousand yard mark consistently? I congratulate Floyd Little for getting in and am a huge fan of the classic days of the AFL and NFL, but at the same time feel there were many others who were more worthy of getting in this year. You're right Kevin LeBeau. Dick LeBeau definitely deserves the nod not only for his playing career, but his mastery in coaching. Congratulations to him and your family.

    I am not at all shocked about the chosen members of the Hall of Fame. I think the hall voters need to be cautious on their choices especially with the offensive numbers that were put up since 1980's. There are players in the 1960's and 1970's that would have comparable numbers to Carter, Reed, Brown, Sharpe, etc. Jerry Rice changed the position, but I think they should also look at Harold Carmichael, Drew Pearson, Harold Jackson, Cliff Branch, Otis Taylor, or Billy Howton. If these players would have played their entire career in the passing NFL they would also be sure HOF's. But are they even discussed in the mix? NO! You can argue all you want, but the stats of today need to reevaluated, especially when it comes to receiving. You could argue that Dave Krieg should be a HOF with his numbers, but is he even mentioned. COME ON!

    Cris Carter certainly deserves the nod, but you have to remember...he was the T.O. of his time. It wasn't until he got to Minnesota and realized his former negative impacts on teams (Philly) that he matured and became truly great (trying to teach Moss what he learned). Numbers or not...your overall career is evaluated, and when you play individual superstar instead of team member, it delays your path to Canton. He'll get there, but his early career doesn't warrant a first ballot pass.
