FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jan. 9, 2010

Four teams determined for Men’s National Championship so far

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) – With one day of action left in the 2010 Nationals Qualifying Round, four teams have been determined to play for the national championship title in March.

Former national champions Todd Birr (Mankato, Minn.) and Pete Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) and the young Blake Morton rink out of Madison, Wis., secured spots from the Midwest South qualifier in Mankato to the 2010 National Championships, which will take place March 6-13 in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Four teams are headed to a playoff round out of the east qualifier to determine the lone berth from the Potomac Curling Club. Teams skipped by Matt Hames (Buffalo, N.Y.), Bryan Wight (Canandaigua, N.Y.), Kevin Deeren (Chicago) and Wes Johnson (Snohomish, Wash.) meet Sunday morning to award a team a trip to the 2010 Nationals. Hames, with a 6-0 record, will take on Deeren while Wight and Johnson will battle in the other semifinal. Hames got the better of Wight in the final game of the A pool tonight by a 9-7 score.

In the Midwest North qualifier in Fargo, Matt Stevens finished the round robin with a perfect 5-0 record. With a two loss provision at this qualifier, Kevin Kakela’s team, with its 4-1 record will play Stevens and his Bemidji teammates Cody Stevens, Bob Liapis and Jeff Breyen tomorrow to determine the champion of this qualifier. 1997 national champion Kakela (Rolla, N.D.) and teammates Chad Carlson (Devils Lake, N.D.), Ryan Lagasse (Bottineau, N.D.) and Todd Ussatis (Bismarck, N.D.) finished with a 4-1 record with the lone loss coming at the hands of Stevens.

At the Midwest South qualifier in Mankato, one draw of the round robin remains on Sunday morning. Four berths to the Nationals are available from this qualifier. Despite the single draw remaining, three spots are secured by Birr (6-1), Morton (6-2) and Fenson (5-2) based on their records. At 4-3, Craig Brown (Madison, Wis.) can earn the final spot with a win tomorrow over Kroy Nernberger (Madison, Wis.). A loss coupled with a win by Mike Farbelow (Minneapolis, Minn.) would force a playoff for the final direct berth. Only Morton has wrapped up play, finishing with a 6-2 record for the team that just last week won the Wisconsin Junior Men’s Championship. They’ll now play in two major national championships this season as the 2010 Junior Nationals get underway Jan. 23 in Bemidji, Minn.

Birr and teammates Paul Pustovar (Hibbing, Minn.), Tom O'Connor (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) and Kevin Birr (St. Peter, Minn.) notched that sixth win with an 8-4 defeat of Brown while
Morton and teammates Marcus Fonger (Cottage Grove, Wis.), Tommy Juszczyk (McFarland, Wis.), Calvin Weber (McFarland, Wis.) and Mark Hartman (Sun Prairie, Wis.) held off Greg Wilson (Vernon Hills, Ill.), 9-6.

The remaining three teams for the Nationals will be determined at the challenge round Feb. 4-7 in Grafton, N.D. Those competing teams will be known as the qualifying round wraps up.

Day one yields one upset at 2010 Nationals qualifier

(STEVENS POINT, Wis.) - It was a relatively quiet start yesterday as the qualifying round for the 2010 U.S. National Championships got underway with just one major upset served up.

2008 national champion Craig Brown (Madison, Wis.) faltered last night in a 9-4 defeat at the hands of the 2010 Wisconsin junior champions led by Blake Morton (McFarland, Wis.) to fall to 1-1 in the standings. Leading the way at 2-0 are teams skipped by 2006 Olympic bronze medalist Pete Fenson (Bemidji, Minn.) and 2007 world bronze medalist Todd Birr (Mankato, Minn.).

Fenson and teammates Shawn Rojeski (Chisholm, Minn.), Joe Polo (Duluth, Minn.) and Tyler George (Duluth, Minn.) earned a lopsided win over Matt Carlson, 8-0, and held off Lionel Locke's rink, 10-7, for the 2-0 record. Birr and teammates Paul Pustovar (Hibbing, Minn.), Tom O'Connor (Brooklyn Center, Minn.) and Kevin Birr (St. Peter, Minn.) earned a 9-3 win over good friend Greg Wilson's team from Illinois and picked up a 6-1 win over Kroy Nernberger's Wisconsin team to also improve to 2-0.

In the east qualifier where 13 teams are competing at the Potomac Curling Club in Laurel, Md., four teams are undefeated after four draws. The Fargo qualifier gets underway this afternoon in North Dakota with six teams competing.

Teams skipped by Matt Hames (Buffalo, N.Y.), Bryan Wight (Canandaigua, N.Y.), Kevin Deeren (Chicago) and Brandon Corbett (Rochester, N.Y.) lead the east qualifier. Hames and teammates Bill Stopera (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.), Martin Sather (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Dean Gemmell (Short Hills, N.J.) defeated Derek Surka's previously undefeated team, 6-3, this morning to improve to 3-0 atop the A group.
