In his first practice as a member of the Portland Trail Blazers, Marcus Camby did what any good newcomer would do: he introduced himself.

Did he shake hands? Tell a joke to break the ice? Talk a little about who he is and where he’s from? Hobbies, favorite foods, things like that? Maybe he did, maybe he didn’t. No one mentioned whether those interactions took place. But what was referenced was the way Camby introduced himself to rookie Patty Mills.

During a game of five-on-five between the “black” and “white” units, Patty Mills, running the point for white, went up for a layup, which Camby promptly rejected before the ball had time to get more than a few inches away from the young Australian’s hands.

“(Camby) came down and threw one of Patty Mills’ shots out of here,” said Brandon Roy, who played alongside Camby in the first unit with Andre Miller, Martell Webster and LaMarcus Aldridge. “Patty tried to attack. I don’t know what he was thinking.” continue

With Brandon Roy playing his first game since Jan. 20 and Marcus Camby watching his new team from the bench, the Trail Blazers had little trouble beat the Clippers 109-87 Tuesday night at the Rose Garden.

Martell Webster led Portland, which has won two straight and five of its last eight games, with a career-high tying 28 points thanks to a career-high seven 3-pointers. LaMarcus Aldridge added 22 as the Trail Blazers improved to 16-6 when scoring at least 100 points.

Roy had played just one game since Jan. 13 because of an injured hamstring, but the three-time All-Star guard returned to the starting lineup and finished with four points, one assist and two steals in 15 minutes. He did not play in the second half due to his right hamstring.

The Trail Blazers acquired Camby from the Clippers earlier Tuesday. Camby (6-11, 235) averaged 7.7 points, 12.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.94 blocked shots and 31.3 minutes in 51 games (all starts) for the Clippers this season. His rebound and blocked shot averages rank second and sixth in the NBA, respectively.
