Sony's Uncharted 2 and its writer, Amy Hennig, have taken the top nod for writing in the video game category at the Writers Guild of America awards.

The game, which recently passed 3.5 million units sold, beat out Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed II, Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Bethesda Softworks' Wet, which were announced as nominees earlier this year.

2010 marks the third year for the WGA's Video Game Writing Award. Last year, the award went to Haden Blackman, Shawn Pitman, John Stafford, and Cameron Suey, who wrote LucasArts' Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. The first WGA Video Game Writing Award went to Dave Ellis and Adam Cogan, who wrote D3 Publisher's Dead Head Fred.

The WGA said that the Video Game Writing Award is meant to "encourage storytelling excellence in videogames, to improve the status of writers, and to encourage uniform standards within the gaming industry."

In order to be eligible for the award, credited game writers are required to have been members--or applied to be members--of the WGA's Videogame Writers Caucus at the time of submission. Games also must have separate credits for the writer or writers, and have been released between December 1, 2008 and November 30, 2009.

To clarify the membership requirement. Any game can be entered. Writers credited, who are not yet members, must pay $75 to become a minor member in the WGA video game caucus. A lot of contests cost about $100.

I know. Last time (2008) I paid $75 dollars to enter a game into the WGA awards. I'm glad I did. Mine was the only small indie game ever to be nominated for the award. 'Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble!'

The WGA awards are a great opportunity for indies!

It is also, AFAIK, the only award specifically devoted to writing in a game. It's another sign that the video game industry has little respect for writers. Other 'story awards' are about presentation. Not that that's bad, but graphics and sound artists have specific awards that can seriously boost their careers. One bad voice actor can ruin the best dialog. Good writers have to stand in the snow and sell pencils after a game ships.


Okay, I got on a rant... sigh.
