Have you ever wondered how many computers it takes for Pixar to render their big screen 3d animated films or ILM to render giant transforming robotic aliens? I understand this area of filmmaking might not be interesting to everyone, but I find it fascinating. Besides being a huge film geek, I’m somewhat of a techie as well. The first time I had the opportunity to visit LucasFilm, they actually showed me the company’s huge renderfarm, a room in the basement housing all the computer servers used for all the LucasFilm, LucasArts and ILM productions. I took the photo above.

A few videos have been circulating the interwebs this week giving us a glimpse at the tech behind LucasFilm and Pixar, the San Francisco Bay Area’s two big film companies. Watch them now, after the jump.

Everett Bradford is, for all intents and purposes, a real-life Tony Stark/Iron Man in the making. I wouldn’t be surprised if in a few years we see him flying around the sky fighting supervillains with his self-made robotic suit. He recently demonstrated his “Prometheus Device”, which is a hand-mounted appliance that shoots real fire, in a flame-thrower like blast, into the air. Head on over to Picasa to see scans of Bradford’s design notebook, sketches, CAD shots, and photos of the device in and out of action. Watch a video demonstration of the contraption after the jump.

Nintendo Wii to Get Netflix Streaming… in HD?

netflix_wii

Forget all of that I’m a Mac, I’m a PC business, not to mention rivalry between Beatles and Stones or Betty and Veronica, I’ve most often been caught up in a scrap between Nintendo and their rivals. For the record, I’m very much on the side of Nintendo and love my Wii dearly. At least as far as I’m concerned then, the following is incredible news.

Netflix on demand is coming to the Wii, as it has for the PS3, the X-Box 360 and a number of Blu-Ray players. Brilliantly, the Wii is going to HD support as well, the better to screen your VOD choices (and, I assume give Super Mario Galaxy 2 a little something that part 1 didn’t have).

Last week, I got to attend Fox Home Entertainment’s Blu-Ray press summit and interview several of the creators behind such films as Wolverine, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge and Fight Club. Perhaps the highlight, however, was seeing the Fox team’s presentations on the future of the Blu-Ray medium and how they’re brewing up some tasty new functions and features for future releases. I’ll detail it all after the break, from iPod touch and iPhone connectivity to Real-D style 3D for the home, and more in between.

Cool Stuff: The Official Comic-Con iPhone App

comic con iphone

iPhone owners who are headed to San Diego this week should download the official Comic-Con iPhone app. It basically provides all the information you would normally find in the official Comic-Con International program book, including maps of the halls and exhibit floor, program schedules, and a news feed without having to lug around that heavy program. Plus the programing line-up and exhibitor listing is easily searchable, and the maps are multi-touch zoomable (of course).
