Singles

A big week of movement on the singles chart with a new No.1 and three other tracks making a big charge into the top 10. The Midnight Beast’s parody of Tik Tok has moved from No.16 into No.5, Rihanna’s Rude Boy has moved from No.17 to No.7 and Cheryl Cole’s 3 Words has moved from No.25 to No.9. Pitbull’s Shut It Down has moved nineteen places and it’s now at No.37. Melbourne act Miami Horror have re-entered the chart at No.90 with their track Sometimes. This is on the back of it being featured heavily on ad campaign by one of the major phone carriers.

 

IN MY HEAD - Jason Derulo
No.1

Storming its way in to debut at the top spot is the second single from American R&B star Jason Derulo. In My Head follows on from Whatcha Say (No.5 Jan. ’10) and comes from Derulo’s self-titled debut album, which will be released in March. This track is heavier and with more of an electro feel than his debut track. Derulo has said that the release of these two tracks is intended to show various sides of his sound in the lead up to the album’s release.

 

WE ARE THE WORLD 25 FOR HAITI - Artists For Haiti
No.18
Twenty-five years on from the original release of this track, many of the music world’s biggest names have gotten together to re-record We Are The World in aid of the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti. Included on this new version are the likes of P!nk, Usher, Justin Bieber, Mary J. Blige, Miley Cyrus and Celine Dion. We Are The World was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie. The original version, which featured the likes of Kenny Rogers, Kenny Loggins, Hall & Oates, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper and Stevie Wonder, topped the Australian charts back in April 1985.

 

HALLELUJAH - k.d. Lang
No.19

With the world gripped in Winter Olympic fever, it’s fitting that this track, which was performed by k.d. Lang during the opening ceremony, should enter the charts. Hallelujah was written and originally performed by fellow Canadian Leonard Cohen in 1984 and has since been covered by the likes of Jeff Buckley, John Cale, Bob Dylan and Justin Timberlake. The track was previously recorded by Lang for her 2004 album Hymns Of The 49th Parallel (No.3 Sep. ’04).

 

EVERYBODY HURTS - Helping Haiti
No.28

This track is the UK’s charity single in aid for Haiti. The track was originally recorded and release by R.E.M. in 1993 and peaked at No.6 on the ARIA Singles Chart in September of the same year. This version, put together by music mogul Simon Cowell, includes Leona Lewis, Rod Stewart, Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams, James Blunt and Susan Boyle. Miley Cyrus, who also sings on We Are The World, features on this track. It has reached the top spot in the UK and Ireland.

 

PUT IT IN A LOVE SONG - Alicia Keys Feat. Beyonce
No.42

The second single to chart from Alicia Keys’ album The Element Of Freedom (No.19 Jan. ‘10). The track features vocal contributions from Beyonce, who Keys has been friends with since they both signed to the same label. Previously, Keys charted with the album’s lead single Doesn’t Mean Anything (No.96 Dec. ’09). The video for the track was shot in Rio de Janeiro and features both performers in Carnival-inspired outfits.

 

IF WE EVER MEET AGAIN - Timbaland Feat. Katy Perry
No.62

Following on from the success of Morning After Dark (No.19 Feb. ’10), super-producer Timbaland has scored himself another chart entry from the album Shock Value II (No.35 Jan. ’10). The video features Timbaland and Katy Perry playing a couple of thieves, one a jewel thief and one an art thief. Timbaland has said that the recent work of The Black Eyed Peas was one of the inspirations behind this recording.

 

CRAWL - Chris Brown
No.67
The second single to come from Chris Brown’s album Graffiti (No.40 Dec. ’09), features the R&B star singing about a relationship that fell through his fingers. Some have speculated that the lyrics are related to Brown’s relationship with Rihanna. However, he has stated that, while the lyrics could be about that relationship, the lyrics are supposed to be portraying a universal situation. I Can Transform Ya, the album’s first single, peaked at No.21 in January of this year.

 

HEY, SOUL SISTER - Train
No.72

American band Train return to the chart for the first time since 2003 with this, the first track from their fifth studio album Save Me San Francisco. Hey, Soul Sister features an unusual lead instrument, the ukulele. Lead singer Pat Monahan has said he was trying to write a track inspired by INXS but it didn’t start to gel until the ukulele was added. Train achieved their best result on the chart with Drops Of Jupiter (No.5 Aug. ’01).

 

LOGIC - Operator Please
No.73

Returning with the first single from their forthcoming second album Gloves, is Gold Coast band Operator Please. The band first struck big with their debut album Yes Yes Vindictive (No.28 Nov. ’07) and the single Just A Song About Ping Pong (No.12 Aug. ’07). The band spent the majority of 2009 hauled up in the studio, writing and recording Gloves. They will be previewing new tracks in a number of upcoming appearances as part of the Future Music Festival. Gloves will be released in April.

 

TAKE YOUR SHIRT OFF - T-Pain
No.82
Streaking his way into the chart this week is hip hop star T-Pain and his new track, Take Your Shirt Off. The track features more of T-Pain’s trademark use of AutoTune on his vocals. The song comes from his forthcoming album, RevolveR. T-Pain has previously scored hits with Buy U A Drank (Shawty Swappin’) (No.18 Sep. ’07), I’m N Luv (Wit A Stripper) (No.24 July ’06) and featured with The Lonely Island and their track I’m On A Boat (No.14 May ’09).

Albums

For the second week running, Mumford & Sons top the chart with Sigh No More and Susan Boyle sits at No.2 with I Dreamed A Dream. Jumping into No.3 is bullet performer k.d. Lang with Recollection. The Canadian singer’s career retrospective entered the chart at No.56 last week. On the back of the barnstorming Australian tour, AC/DC have had a big week on the chart. Black Ice has moved up to No.11. Backtracks, Back In Black and Live have also moved up sitting at No.39, No.57 and No.46 respectively. The Razor’s Edge has re-entered the chart at No.97. Also on a recent tour, Cliff Richard & The Shadows have also re-entered the chart with their reunion album Reunited at No.63.

 

SOLDIER OF LOVE - Sade
No.4

Nearly ten years since they released their last studio album – Lovers Rock (No.28 Feb. ’01) – British R&B group Sade return with their sixth studio album, Soldier Of Love. It has topped the charts in many regions including Canada, Sweden, Switzerland, France and Poland, as well as topping the Billboard 200 and the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop albums charts. Soldier Of Love is Sade’s best-performing album on the ARIA chart. Their previous best was Love Deluxe (No.13 Mar. ’93).

 

MECHANIZE - Fear Factory
No.24

American industrial metal heroes Fear Factory release their first album of new material in almost five years with Mechanize. The album marks the return to the group by founding guitarist Dino Cazares. This is the first new release since Fear Factory started performing again in early 2009. It’s the second time Fear Factory has made a comeback. They originally split in 2002, only to return in 2003. Fear Factory was recently in Australia as part of the Big Day Out.

 

SCREAMWORKS: LOVE IN THEORY AND PRACTICE - HIM
No.36
Finnish rockers HIM (His Infernal Majesty) return to the chart with this new album, based on love and relationships. It is the group’s seventh studio album and follows Venus Doom (No.32 Sept. ’07). The band’s leader, Ville Valo, has said that a lot of the album is related to the breakdown of long-term relationships and the aspects which lead to them becoming irreparable. One version of the album contains a bonus disc that features the entire album re-recorded acoustically.

 

SCRATCH MY BACK - Peter Gabriel
No.59

Always an artist that likes to think outside the box, Peter Gabriel has decided to put his own slant on the format of the covers album. Scratch My Back sees the one-time Genesis vocalist covering tracks by the likes of David Bowie, Paul Simon, Radiohead, Elbow, Talking Heads and Bon Iver. The second part of the concept involves the artists that Gabriel has covered returning the favour and covering one of his tracks. These tracks are intended for an album called I’ll Scratch Yours. Gabriel’s most successful album on the ARIA chart was Us (No.3 Oct. ’92).

 

THE CONSTANT - Story Of The Year
No.88

St Louis-based post-hardcore band Story Of The Year achieves their third placing on the ARIA Albums chart with their fourth studio album. The Constant follows The Black Swan (No.25 Apr. ’08). Story Of The Year formed in 1995 and it took them eight years to get signed and to release an album. The group has said that the album title is open for interpretation.

 

NEED YOU NOW - Lady Antebellum
No.93

The second album from American country trio, Lady Antebellum, is their first to enter the ARIA Albums chart. The album has already topped the country charts in both the US and Canada, as well as topping the Billboard 200. Lady Antebellum is made up of Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott. They formed in 2006 and Kelley and Haywood had attended middle school together.
