Geneva Auto Show: Bertone Pandion

Introduced on Tuesday: Bertone Pandion

What is it? It is a statement car by Bertone, the illustrious Italian design house. “My job is to bring back the talent farm, to tell people Bertone is back!” said Michael Robinson, brand and design director of Bertone Stile. As such, the Pandion is pure show-car fantasy, even if Bertone says it could be put into production within two or three years. Bertone needs the cooperation of a major automaker to survive. There is a 4.7-liter Alfa Romeo-sourced V-8 engine in the nose. The chassis comes from a Maserati GranTurismo. A Bertone spokesman says the car is a runner, though my request for a test drive has gone unanswered.

How’s it look? Stunning. The Bertone Pandion is arguably one of the best looking cars here. Mr. Robinson, brand and design director of Bertone, says the car would be “perfect for the U.S.” But the massive doors – when open they take nearly the entire side of the car with them – and outrageous interior make production unlikely.
