LB Witherspoon Could Return To Carolina

March 7, 2010 | Last Updated: 3/7/10 1:27 PM ET | Comments (5)

On Friday evening, head coach Andy Reid said that there is a chance that linebacker Will Witherspoon could return to the Eagles. The Eagles released Witherspoon on Friday.

But there's speculation that Witherspoon could return "home" to Carolina. Steve Reed of the Gaston Gazette wrote "I think there's a chance Witherspoon (with a little help recruiting from Dan Morgan) might want to come back home if the price is right. After all, the Panthers need to find someone to fill Na'il Diggs' spot at strong side linebacker."

Witherspoon was a third-round pick of the Panthers in 2002 and spent four years with them before signing a big-money free agent deal in 2006 with the St. Louis Rams. Witherspoon was a part of the Panthers team that beat the Eagles to win the NFC title in 2003.

The Eagles acquired Witherspoon at the trade deadline this past season for wide receiver Brandon Gibson and a 2010 fifth-round pick.

Witherspoon's debut came in the October Monday night win at Washington and he made quite an impression. He intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown, recorded a sack and forced a fumble. Witherspoon accomplished the rare feat of playing in 17 regular season games with no bye week.

hey mcnabballday. You're showing your ignorance. First, we have 2 good running backs. Mccoy and Weaver are both servicable running backs. We don't use them anyway, but I would like to get another back to push Mccoy. Also, we have a very good number 2 receiver. Maclin is a very good receiver. He's also very consistent through his first year. I'm hoping he steps it up another level this year. We have several playmakers on Defense. We have trent cole, patterson and bunkley fulfill the role they are required to fill. Not many sacks, but they clog up the middle very nicely. ..and your statement on Kampman shows even more of your lack of knowledge. He's already taken.
