This week's cover: Spring TV Preview: We've got it bad for 'The Good Wife'

EW-cover-1093 Before she took the lead role as Alicia Florrick in CBS’ hit The Good Wife, Julianna Margulies admits she was a little concerned that starring in the legal drama would be boring. After all, most procedural shows avoid anything resembling character development in favor of case-of-the-week storytelling. Says the actress, “One of the reasons Murder, She Wrote was on for so long was that America loves an ending after each show, where you can solve it and it’s done.”

Margulies needn’t have worried. The Good Wife has proved itself unique in that it gives viewers the best of both worlds — acting as a procedural drama with open-and-shut stories every episode and also stirring up engrossing serialized drama courtesy of the tabloid-worthy personal lives of dutiful-wife-turned-entry-level-lawyer Alicia and her disgraced husband, former Illinois state’s attorney Peter (Chris Noth). Even procedural-loving CBS wants the writers to keep the Florrick family drama front and center. “You’d expect a network to say, ‘No, no, no! More cases! More cases!’” says Robert King, who created and executive-produces the series along with his wife, Michelle. “Our biggest challenge is figuring out how little we can tell about the courtroom case and get by.”

Now that Peter is out of jail and back home on house arrest — and plotting a totally unvetted return to politics, by the way — the remainder of the season will center on one question: Can Alicia forgive her husband’s corruption and prostitution-riddled past, or is time to move on… perhaps to her colleague and former college buddy Will (Josh Charles)? “I don’t know if they’ll be able to recover or not,” says Noth of Alicia and Peter. “That’s part of the ongoing drama.”

Love that cover. The Good Wife has become one of the shows I most look forward to each week. Excellent storytelling and top notch acting. Proof that subtle is just as good if not better then over the top shows.

So right! Best new show on television (although I really don’t like Will….gotta love Chris Noth!)

      • marilyn newman

Love Chris and JM together.. if she ends up with Will, what will they do with Chris story line?Chris has to stay! I love the family drama, but the cases give the show longevity..if the focus is on the family, it will burn out too soon

GREAT pick EW! The Good Wife is an amazing show and Julianna Margulies is the best actress on tv right now. They couldn’t have gotten a better female to play this part! The rest of the cast is solid as well, which makes the show even more amazing. Finally a legal drama that I look forward to watching each week. Bravo!

Julianna looks lovely. I love this show. Every little detail is great: from the apartment decor to the colors of the outfits worn. The acting is top notch. EW, can we get recaps for The Good Wife? Pretty please!

No wonder I had cancelled my subscription.

But thankfully you still troll through the message boards.

  • crispy

LOL! How much did CBS pay for that?

  • austin

The best show of the year, along with Modern Family. So happy so see them on the cover.

    • Lorie

ITA! TGW is this year’s best new drama, and MF is the best new comedy.

    • jared4ever

OMG I laughed SOOOO hard at Modern Family last night!!

  • Julia

Awesome. Excellent pick, EW! This is definitely my favorite show of this year, and it deserves all the praise and publicity it gets.

Since I work Thursday nights, I have taped the CBS lineup from NCIS to Good Wife…I always watch Wife before I go to sleep. It just keeps getting better. Christine Baranski is top notch as well…love her laugh!

    • Kathy

Um…except “The Good Wife” is on Tuesday night.

  • KFed

The first few minutes of the first ep were amazing … and then it became a courtroom drama. I have no interest in the cases, they bog down what could be a far more interesting show. The fact the producers seem to agree hardly helps.

    • Kara

I agree, they should spend less time on the cases, that’s always the least interesting part of the show.

  • couchgrouch

great, great show. I wish CBS would run the early eps on Saturday nights.

  • Pink Lemonade

I really like this show. I am a little tired of her “deer in the headlights” look regarding office politics and her kids hiding all kinds of crap from her. I want her to divorce Peter and NOT have a romance with Will. That would be too obvious and cliche.

I also LOVE the addition of Gary Cole. I hope he’s around a lot more and he would make a good love interest for Baranski’s character. I love the Eli Gold character too. Love the show CBS. Don’t screw it up.

    • beth

I want her to divorce peter and END UP WITH WILL! Best show on Tv right now….

      • Kathy

NO! She needs to figure out this new side of her relationship with Peter. Will can be quite the jerk.

  • Alex

Erm… no. The best TV show right now is Community!

    • Allan

      Ugh! You meant worst, right?

  • Raquel

I’ve never been much for the usual crime/lawyer dramas and never thought I’d get into this show, but it’s awesome. Great cast. And, is it just me or is Kalinda one of the most bad-ass characters ever?!?

    • beth

Kalinda is gritty, tough and well-written, I would love an Emmy nod for her!

  • Ceballos

I don’t watch “The Good Wife” (nothing against it, I just haven’t checked it out), but this cover is ok by me if only for momentarily putting Sawyer and Juliet back together.

    • crispy

I think you could play a pretty solid game of 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon with that cover.
