Despite all of the ways Mass Effect 2 is more engaging to play and explore, after 35 remarkable hours it was the characters that stayed with us… Game of the year in January? Oh, go on then. [Feb 2010, p.112]
X360 Magazine UK
Both an astonishing RPG and confident shooter, Mass Effect 2 is daring, shocking and often awe-inspiring in its use of choice. This is the future of storytelling in videogames. [Issue#, p.85]
Official Xbox Magazine UK
It's mature: not because of profanity or nudey bits, but because it tackles complicated themes without telling you what to think. Having already sunk a distressing number of hours into ME2, the second this sentence is finished we're firing it up and exploring the rest of the universe.

Mass Effect 2 is the perfect fusion of the shooter and RPG genres. When you're not playing it, you wish you were. When you are playing it, you can't imagine doing anything else. Engrossing, captivating, stunning. Roll on DLC, and Mass Effect 3.

Mass Effect 2 delivers the best experience of its kind in this generation-and considering I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since I finished my initial 39-hour playthrough a few days ago, a lower score would feel disingenuous. From its mechanics to its writing to its presentation, Mass Effect 2 is the kind of game that justifies gushing clichés and superlatives. I can't recommend it highly enough.

We can't do anything but to celebrate another masterpiece from Bioware, a game that has never been so close to perfection. If you have not upgraded your PC yet, it's time to do it; if you you needed an excuse to buy an Xbox 360, now you have one. Not to play this game would be crazy.

Perhaps BioWare's greatest success in Mass Effect 2 has been taking a complex RPG and making it effortless to understand, play and enjoy on a constant basis, because it has done this in a manner that should prove utterly essential to veterans and newcomers alike, and more than enough to suggest Mass Effect 3 will be the most important game in BioWare's history.

My journey with Commander Shepherd opened up a new view of what this form of entertainment can do, and allowed me to emotionally connect (and care) with the virtual characters on my television screen. The dialogue, story progression, graphics, soundtrack, controls, and presentation are all well above what so many other games of this genre are offering these days... PlanetXbox360.com has never given a perfect score, until now.

The fluid systems -- the navigation, the combat, and the quick-fire missions -- combine to make Mass Effect 2 an RPG that challenges the genre conventions. The superb emphasis on character development, the gripping plot elements and big-budget presentation aren't too bad either.

This is a series that deserves its own place in gaming history and while there will always be comparisons of where it originated from. It's nice to know that there can be a story told in space that is so epic, so intelligent, and so rewarding, that doesn't have to have the word "Star" in its title.

The second part of the Mass Effect saga is nothing short of a milestone in game design. The technical issues present in the first game are now gone, a fact that's beautifully demonstrated by the improved graphics engine. There's a ton of worlds to explore, an amazing roster of characters to recruit and a great and engaging story. But Bioware's major feat is how all your decisions have a major impact on how the story, and thereby the trilogy, unfolds.

Mass Effect started with a huge stable of good ideas. Maybe the task of executing on all those ideas was too great for any one development team to accomplish in a single game, but BioWare has really gotten it right the second time around. They took those same ideas and figured out a better way to combine them into a more cohesive, more playable sequel that makes good on every bit of Mass Effect's potential and leaves me staring very grudgingly at the presumable two-year wait until my own Commander Shepard can continue his fight in the next game.

When Mass Effect 3 rolls around to bring this tale to its finale, I'd really like to see BioWare strike some sort of happy medium between the clumsily executed RPG mechanics of the first game and the stripped-down shooter feel of this sequel. I played the game, and I liked it. It made for a fun 32 Hour experience. At the end 7 hours went by without me noticing, I have a hard time focusing on a thing for long. I have not played the first game, and this intrigued me to check out the first game. Please, if you find the game to be average give it a average vote, IE 4-6. I think the 1up review (A-) gave a good and reflected run on the strengths, weaknesses and differences between the first and second. This is not an up-vote down-vote. Even thought i give it a clean hypocritical up-vote.
Dave J gave it a7:
ME2 is a good shooter and a fun game, for what is is. The problem is that I wanted an RPG, not a shooter. I want depth, a non-linear structure, missions where I don't have to shoot stuff, character development, conversations that have an effect on the world and the characters in it. I want to explore and lose myself in an imaginary world, not just go down corridor after corridor hiding behind conveniently-placed barriers shooting waves of aliens before flicking a switch and getting an end-of-level screen, like a 90s shooter. A good game for what it is, but a huge step backwards in every area (bar graphics) from the first game.

Same old story, same old song and Danceeeee my friends, this is Ridiculous! I just wasted 50 dollars on this game, and its basically the same stupid Mass Effect one problems, Over-bloated, unfollowable story that's plagued with the same problems as the first one, you're telling me they still can't figure out the AUDIO levels?! I can't hear half the lines of speech, My character plods around space like playing an old SNES game, whereas you just keep hoping he'll move alittle faster, or this crummy repaint of the same garbage Bioware tricked me into buying last time called Mass effect. I don't understand the Hype at all, have you all been paid for you're time? This game falls far, FAR, short of anything ground breaking like Fallout, Bioware in my opinion, after Dragon age's slight disappointment < or major disappointment if you bought the Console version like me > Is slipping down hill in quality. It used to be I'd pick up a bioware title just because they put out great games, but now it's getting to be they put out buggy, lower quality games they expect to patch and make proper? TRY shipping a properly looked over product, instead of trying to pump out game after game. It seems as though the scores are so high maybe due to the fact those that didnt like the first havent brought into the hype, but I did, and let me tell you I regret it already, The excitement the silly articles and scores people have given this game undermine the product itself, They claim in one major Magazine put out by a giant game retailer, that the mechanics people complained of have been removed, but that really only boil down changing the unlocking and hacking parts of the game, Which are two seconds stupid little mini-games, THE ENGINE RUNS THE SAME! Shepard's choices for looks are still the same generic space-man, the voice actors still grapple with a lore that's far too overloaded with nuances for anyone really listening to get bored and left feeling as though it was written for people who just click through this garbage they're calling dialog, Why do I care, I ask them, You've hardly even made me feel like I am this character, it's more like watching a movie you don't care about, you're just waiting for the shooting to start, And Thats just about the same as the first game as well BUT WAIT, we need a clip now! oohhh that makes a ton of sense, we don't overheat now guns use antiqued bullet clips when last installment I had a Assault rifle firing thousands of odd shaped plasma green b.b's a second. That was the only complain about the gunplay?! Fallout 3 has a better grasp on RPG gunplay then they do over at Bioware, and Bethesda has alittle ways to go still as well! If you're thinking like me, that It seems people are making this game out to be one of the greatest of all time, try to start thinking of all the games they've been using this STUPID new marketing tactic on us, the communal memory of our glorious public about 5 seconds, We forget they just released the best game of all time two weeks ago, and three weeks before that, and two months prior to that Another Greatest game of all time was Uncharted, OR ANY other big huge media spend fest, if you give these guys a few bucks, They shout Its The Best! yeah right... Avoid Mass Effect 2, it's horrible
[Anonymous] gave it a10:
I have never personally given a game a 10/10. But this game utterly deserves it. It's not perfect, though. Some would argue "if it's not perfect it's not a 10/10!" I disagree. The Normandy loading times are tedious and kill the immersion in one particular mission. There is not as much armor cust as I thought. But my biggest gripe is that the game ended. Yes, I'm serious. Slight spoiler No game has ever made me feel emotion for the characters. I hated Mordin when I first met him, then I was pissed off when he died in MY playthrough. Thane and Miranda's side quests were INCREDIBLE. I liked EVERYONE on my team, even Garrus and Tali, who I thought were boring and uninteresting in part 1. The combat, the scope, the graphics, the presentation, that's all expected in a great game. But what Mass EFfect has that others do not is the best characters to ever appear in a video game. That's what sets it apart and that's why it's the best game I've ever played. Genius.
