Eagles, Jackson Agree To Terms

March 10, 2010 | Last Updated: 3/10/10 3:32 PM ET | Comments (33)

It looks like defensive back Marlin Jackson isn't making that trip up the New Jersey Turnpike after all.

The Eagles have announced that they have agreed to terms on a two-year deal with Jackson.

Jackson met with the media prior to the announcement of the contract. At the time, he said that he would be visiting the New York Jets later today. Obviously, that didn't happen. Why? Well, one of the reasons is because he said that he wanted to play for a winning organization and he knows this is one in Philadelphia.

"They've won each and every year. Andy Reid has done a great job. You look at the roster, they have a top quarterback in the league, they have a great offensive line, they have weapons on offense, they generate great pass rush, they have defensive backs already here," Jackson said. "They have all the pieces that are already needed to win a championship."

A versatile athlete who has seen action at both cornerback and safety in his five-year career, Jackson (6-0, 196) was originally a first round draft choice (29th overall) of the Indianapolis Colts in 2005. He appeared in the first four games for the Colts in 2009 and notched one interception, but missed the rest of the season with a knee injury.

Jackson said that he's ahead of schedule in his rehab and will be full-go by the time training camp arrives.

"I would be capable of doing what is needed to as a football player by mid-May, June," he said. "By training camp, wherever I am, I'll be ready to go full go."

Jackson added that during his discussions with the Eagles they would look at him at both cornerback and safety.

"Whenever I've played and been on the field, I've played well," Jackson said.

The 26-year-old Jackson has played in 56 career games (32 starts), posting 306 tackles and four interceptions. His best season came in 2007 when he started at cornerback in all 16 games and was part of the NFL's 2nd-ranked pass defense that allowed only 172.8 yards per game. That year he set a career high with 112 tackles, which ranked fourth on the team. Jackson has also appeared in six playoff games (two starts) and intercepted Patriots QB Tom Brady with 24 seconds remaining in the 2006 AFC Championship game, sending the Colts to the Super Bowl.

A teammate of WR Jason Avant at the University of Michigan, Jackson was a four-year starter and earned All-America honors as a senior. He finished his college career with 195 tackles, nine interceptions, five forced fumbles, two sacks and two blocked kicks.

The Sharon, PA, native attended Sharon High School, where he earned All-America accolades and was named the Pennsylvania player of the year as a senior. He finished his high school career with 281 tackles and 18 interceptions, including four returned for touchdowns.

The Colts recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award in 2009, Jackson also spends time off the field with his Fight for Life Foundation which he established in 2007 to help inner-city youth make positive life-forming decisions.

UPDATE: Fox Sports' Adam Schein and ESPN's Adam Schefter both report via Twitter that Jackson is going to play free safety.

Peppers? He'd fix the DE problem. Nah...cost too much. Dansby? We need OLB help. Nah..too much too. Rolles? We need a safety who can hit like a man, not an ankle biter. Nah..too much too. Well...there's Marlin Jackson with two acl's in two years. We can play it that he was a 1st round pick and has a SB ring. Fans won't even notice we got him real cheap. Andy..what do you think? Well...ahem...I'll take him. These fans are idiots...they won't know the difference. Get him in here and sign him.

Only free agent that is a blue chip talent worth breaking the bank was Peppers. You will see us pass all over antrell rolle next season. I will be laughing when Celek and Ingram are burning the hell out of him. Dansby was never an option.

I'm so happy we got Marlon Jackson. Who needs Peppers, Dansby, or Rolles? We have our guy right here to make sure we reach our goal to make the playoffs again!

Besides that, D jauron is the secondary coach. I'm sure if they the make sure that acl is healed, he will be most effective in the second half of the season.

If he is depth, what does it matter that we got him? SO if he becomes a upgrade at nickel corner that is a bonus. He has more upside than sean jones. So if they are projecting based on that, how is that a bad move. His acl will completely heal at some point but his instincts are still there as well as his ability to lay wood. We get a 1st rd talent for 4rd pay even if he plays like a 3rd rounder.

ok ever since they came out and said the had an interest in this guy i put him and the team down for even thinking about it and after seeing what he had to say in the interview i have come to a real thought that i like the deal done only if he starts at free safty if he becomes a backup then this is a waste of time but i will not go that far until we see what he has left in the tank and what of that left he puts out there on the field

well, how many think that a rookie safety is going to be effective in the first half of the season anyway. If earl thomas drops Eagles will probably snag him but now I think they don't reach for the second tier safeties in the draft. I too am convinced eagles will be targeting the trenches. DL OL LB priorities order. I would love to see them trade mike patterson or bunkley and a 1 for Suh.

Can we sign Tito, Jackie, and Jermaine too? Could not resist that! lol I hope this guy is healthy.

Well, now selecting a DE in the first just got a lot easier to cope with now that Marlin Jackson will probably start at FS..unless the FO believes he isn't ready, then I guess we'll take a FS in the 2nd (Chad Jones or Nate Allen hopefully) but if Earl Thomas is there in the first, you gotta take him guys. We're slowly but surely improving!!!

Marlin jackson played safety and corner in college. Possibly a good pickup for the Eagles because he has experience back there. His talent is at corner but he can play safety. He is at the very least a stop gap and worth a 3rd or 4th round grade at safety. At least he won't have rookie jitters. Only time will tell how he matches up in this system.

Hard to argue about the injury angle with 2 torn ACL's in 2 years, but this is a low risk 2 year deal. Lets hope he can get on the field this year and play well. I like that he is a young 1st round pick from the Colts with a SB ring, and experience, and minus the last 2 years seemed healthy. In theory at least Jauron adds depth to CB position and possibly a starter at FS to his rotation. Injuries aside, great pickup.

operagost you will like this.... "Eight weeks post-operation. I feel like I'm ahead of schedule. I'm walking fine and feeling great." These are direct quotes from Stacy Andrews about last years injury... seems oddly familar to me. If we would add this guy as a nickel or dime corner thatd be great even with the league turning into such a passing league but at safety its way too much to gamble. Oj Atogwe! the front office hasnt even given this guy so much as a sniff.

Yes!! We finally signed my boy Marlin! I remember about 5 or 6 days ago I brought up his name as a possible fit here and some **** called me out saying it'll nevber work..well now looks smart as hell (I WAS THE FIRST ONE ON THIS ENTIRE SITE TO BRING HIS NAME UP BAR NONE.) I'm glad we have him lockec up for 2 yrs so he can sho w what he can do coming of the injury and then the following year after a full season w/ us..and to all you naysayers about Stacy Andrews and now my boy Marlin, shut it already!! Stacy Andrews will start at RG and will produce, Marlin Jackson will contribute at CB (nickel/dime/step-in starter) or FS (possibly start)..no matter how much some of you guys hate it.

I'm not crazy about this signing. After last year I thought for sure the eagles had learned their lesson about signing/drafting injured players. We need healthy bodies. I'm hoping for the best but I have my doubts.

Strange first move for a broken player-with so many players out there who are not a question mark re their physical condition, to take a chance on him is puzzeling, unless they can see into the future with him?Well Andy thinks he is God so maybe he knows!

I like Marlin Jackson as a player but he hasn't shown he can stay on the field. We consistently "role the dice" on players coming off serious knee injuries hoping to hit the lottery. It doesn't work! You need a guy who can solitify the position. Antrel Rolle was there for the taking but we let him go up the turnpike. We have been to the NFC Championship game 4 times for cheap. Imagine if we spent money in the off-season. We got to the Bowl in '04 when we spent money in free agency!!

This signing should be made into a movie: "Stacy Andrews II: Electric Boogaloo". Another basket case they'll pay millions to work with the trainer.

Great move. Finally something!! Any addition to our group of safties is a good one at this point. Especially a former first round draft pick. A 2 year deal doesnt tie us up to him for too long if he doesnt pan out. But if he stays healthy, this could be a great addition.

i love sheldon but he bites on the double moves aswell and actually has a habit of not moving his feet and gets beat on short slants all day long(go watch tape and you wont agrue), samuel never stops his feet, some fan need to stop being sour over a few games that are already over and move on, we got jauron its gonna make a huge difference, buffalo has a had a very solid secondary the last few year and are corner are much better.

trade asante are friggin retarded? hes a top 5 cover corner man some of you fan you know nothing about this sport, people who samuel shut down last year, vincent jackson caught one pass against patterson he cudnt get open on samuel, santana moss twice, brandon marshall caught 5 screens on him cudnt get anything for more than 5-6 yards, he shut down miles austin the first time, and had 9 picks, you should go watch more tape before you talk bud.
