Dean Monroe
16 original songs, eight gorgeous guys and no clothes – and one of those guys is international gay porn star Dean Monroe. Got your attention? Good.

As Dean gears up to make his UK stage debut in Naked Boys Singing, we spoke to him about sex tips, monogamy, dating and showing off his vocal skills as well as his body.

I’m rather excited that you’re coming to London. So what can we expect from Naked Boys Singing?
A lot of singing, dancing and, of course, male nudity. Just a really fun time.

What was it about the show that made you want to get involved?
The fact that it will be shown in the West End. I mean, how many times can a boy say he performed in London's theatre land? Also, it's a celebration of the male nude - we don't see a lot of that in London these days.

So it wasn’t because you got the chance to take you clothes off onstage rather than on film?
Well, taking my clothes off is only part of the fun. The real thrill for me is singing in front of an audience.

Tell me a little about your character in Naked Boys Singing.
I tell the story of a young porn star with a Jewish background. My solo song is called 'Perky Little Porn Star'. It's quite fun really because I can relate to all the lyrics in the songs - it describes my own life to a T.

How similar are you to him?
Very similar. Almost everything I sing about has happened in my own life. I sing about how 'I can't believe it's happening to me, I get to live a gay man's fantasy'. That's exactly how I felt when I was first invited to America to star in my first film.

Who would you like to see singing naked?
JLS.

So have you all been comparing sizes - anyone we should be looking out for?!
All I can say is that I've passed on my expert experience to the other boys on how to hang low in the cold, so we will all be in tip top form when you see us naked on stage.

Do you have a favourite scene or line from the show?
At the end of my song, I sing about my porn star legacy and no great actor's life for me. I guess this means I can't be President. It's a more serious moment in the song that describes how society frowns upon people in the sex industry and porn.

"All I can say is that I've passed on my expert experience to the other boys on how to hang low in the cold, so we will all be in tip top form when you see us naked on stage."

We all know you from your porn career, but I expect most people didn’t know you could sing. Are you nervous about showing off your vocal skills?
No, until I released my first single last year no one knew I was a singer. I'm not nervous at all about the singing part of the show - I'm more worried about the dancing bits.

So are you more Julie Andrews or Elaine Stritch in the singing department?
I like Elaine Stritch because of the comic side to her style and performances and that she never took things too seriously. That's the way I am, too - always joking and smiling.

Tell us a little about your single ‘Closer To You?’
At the beginning of 2008, I was desperate to do something with my singing and song writing. Of course, without financial backing and support from a record company, it's almost impossible to get noticed. So I decided to produce the song, promote it and sell it all on my own using the internet.

With my tiny celebrity status in the gay world. I managed to get it out there. I think I've sold about 5,000 copies all together so far.

I’ve seen some video clips of you performing it with some sexy dancers. Do you enjoy the big production number side of the industry?
Oh, yes! Give me a glossy stage surrounded by LED screens and a group of dancers and I'm in heaven, the bigger the better. I love a big show. That's what excites me as a viewer and even more as a performer.

What’s been the most ridiculous thing you’ve been asked to do for a promotion?
I guess it was here in London. It was in Soho in the middle of winter. I was asked to parade around Old Compton Street in the smallest tighty whities and a cowboy shirt with two cowgirl drag queens to promote a Falcon film called Riding Hard.

You have a great body and obviously work out – what’s your fitness secret?
Thank you. I'm very consistent with my workout and conscious of my diet. I exfoliate and moisturise daily. That's it, really.

So what do you think is your best asset and what would you change if you could?
I like touching and playing with my ass, so that's my best asset and that's a public opinion, okay. If I would change something, it would be my height. I'd love to be three inches taller.

So what style of briefs do you like to wear and what is it about them you prefer?
I have a selection of briefs I like wearing depending on the day and my mood. As long as they are tight and give good support, I'm happy.

"Love is very difficult for me. It doesn't happen very often, or perhaps I don't let myself fall in love so I can't get hurt. Sex is easier but, as I said before, less of it and better quality."

So can you give us a good gay sex tip?
Always use lube - it makes things so much easier. Always carry some mints or mouth spray with you, there is nothing worse than kissing a gorgeous guy and discovering he has bad breath. It's a real turn off for me.

When and where was the last gay bar/club you went to?
It was Shadow Lounge in Soho, London. The guys that run it are really nice and always get me past the queue and straight down to the bar. The music is hot, too.

If you had to represent your country in international competition, what would it be for?
There is only one - Eurovision!

What cliché most applies to you or your life?
'Oh, he is such a whore, he must get laid every night'. I hear that all the time, but it is so far from the truth. I'm actually a home boy at heart and would rather have less, but quality, sex than go around screwing everything on two legs.

So what comes first: sex or love?
Love is very difficult for me. It doesn't happen very often, or perhaps I don't let myself fall in love so I can't get hurt. Sex is easier but, as I said before, less of it and better quality.

What do you think is the secret of a good relationship?
I'm not an expert on relationships, but I guess good communication between two people.

Work apart, do you believe in monogamy?
I would like to say yes, but unfortunately the way the scene is today it's hard to find someone who can commit to one person. I put myself in that category, as well. In fact, it's almost the norm  now for gay couples to be in open relationships.

Can you remember your first date – where did you go and have you kept in contact?!
My first date aged 16 was with a Greek guy in Mykonos. I was with my sister on the beach and he came up to me and asked me to join him for dinner that night. After dinner, he took me to a tranny bar, which I found so bizarre as I'd never seen a man dressed as a woman before. No, we did not keep in touch.

What’s the worst thing that’s happened to you at an audition?
I'm guessing you mean theatre audition as I've never auditioned for porn. I'm not a trained dancer, so when the audition involves learning moves from the choreographer, I just lose it and I'm the only one standing there thinking, 'Was it left or right?'

What’s next for Dean Monroe?
I'd like to see the reaction I get from Naked Boys Singing and then I'll take it from there. I would love to do more singing, of course, as well as some acting and presenting. I think I have what it takes to make people want to watch, right?
