Well not all cats feel particularly comfortable shoving their heads into a bowl of dirty floor water every time they get thirsty! Some prefer more dignified methods like, y'know, a cup. And when someone refuses to take a hint and get her one, sometimes said cat is forced to take desperate and adorable measures like dipping her paw into the water and licking the water off like it's a sponge.
We kid, Amanda, we kid. We know your cat's just a little loopy. But seriously, you should definitely try the cup thing. The only thing cuter than a cat drinking off its paws is a cat with tiny tea cups taped to its paws.
Update! This isn't the only cat who seems to be drinking 'like a weirdo'. Our friend Meredith sent in a video of her kitty Reno doing the same thing!

I had a cat that used to do that, but she would stick her paws in MY glass and drink the water. When it came to drinking from her water bowl, she did it the traditional way.

Cats have a hard time seeing the water in their bowls. My cat is constantly sticking its nose in the water because it can't see where the water level is. I usually put an ice cube in it so she can see where the level is. That might why some cats have strange drinking habits. They don't like getting water up their noses!

Cats have no depth perception so they can't see the water level. One way to help them is to serve the water in a clear glass bowl. Another way, as clever laurelc3 stated, put an ice cube in the bowl.

Au Contraire mon ami! Cats have superb depth perception! You think the lion became King of the Jungle chasing down wildebeast without being able to tell just how far away the damn thing was? What they CAN'T see is the top of the water, because it's clear, and usually very placid, cats tend to stick their noses into the bowl until something touches their nose. Since they can't see the water, this can come as something of a surprise to lil kitty.

My cat, Sophie, drinks this way as well. She also washes this
way when I fill the dog's bowl in the am. She gets her paw wet
and tosses the water on herself and then washes. Does this
every morning. When I have a margareta she drinks it this way
as well. Changes feet from time to time as they get cold from
the ice chips!!!

My cat does the same thing and has done it all his life. He also drinks from a cup the same way. I told the vet that he does that and he didn't believe me.

I currently have a cat that drinks that way, but only part of the time. He even uses his paw to scoop dry food out of the bowl to be eaten off of the floor. And when we treat him to wetfood, he paws at the wetfood and eats it from his claws. Nothing wrong with them. People eat their own feces... yeah, give em a break.

I agree with Susan. The cat washes itself by placing it's paws in the water bowl. Personally if I walked through a litter box and had to clean my paws afterward I think I would prefer to rinse them first too. The funny thing about my cat is that she wouldn't use her own drinking dish to wash her paws and face. She would use the dog's water dish.

I have a cat who also does this, but only for when I take a bath. She positions her butt on the edge of the tub and dangles her paws in, then licks them dry, and does it about 10-15 more times after that. Kinda makes me feel like i'm making human soup or something. As for her water dish.. she does that the traditional way as well

So cute....cats don't like their wiskers hitting the sides of the bowl and I noticed her swishing it around a little like maybe she thinks its dirty...I think its carried over from when they are young..maybe it splashed in her face and she doesn't like it.....a couple of mine like the faucet on ...I have clean water on every level of my house and change it everyday....

This is true about the wiskers. I have 2 cats and they are the same way. I had to put down HUGH bowls of water so they could drink without their wiskers ever touching the sides. Their wiskers are really sensitive.

Even in the cleanest households, there is always a matter of dust/particles/hair sitting on the water surface in a cats' water bowl. Dose your cat paw the floor in a sweeping fashion before it drinks? This is an indication of contaminates on the surface. Also, the dipping it's paws in the water is an indication.
I solved this for my cats by making them "water fountains".
The water is constantly filtered through rocks and aquarium gravel before they drink it off the perch of rocks as it falls and recollects. They love their fountains. I clean the fountains weekly and replace the water completely. I have to put about one bowl of water in each day to account for the amount they drink. Try it, your Kittehs will love you for it. :)

My cat drinks her milk the same way, with her paw. Her diet consists of milk, toilet water, (ew) Purina cat food, potato chips, and occasional McD's french fries.

That diet is horribly unhealthy for your cat. :(

My kitty Dink does the same thing. I always thought it was just because she learned from the other cats who kept pulling glasses over and spilling them once their heads couldn't fit into the glass. It's pretty darn cute to watch. She still drinks normally from her water bowl, this is just when she's attempting to steal some of my ice water or iced tea...she's silly.

There is a scientific reason why cats drink like this. The wild cats our domestic cats are decended from never drank water. They fed on live prey, which supplied enough liquid for their survival. Domestic cats don't really know what to do with water, and therefore it intriques them, and they will "test the waters" with their paws. Then they have to clean their paws off and thereby, "drink" the water.

My cat Garfield loves to have his own cup. We even bought some of those little paper cups that you get for rinsing your mouth in the bathroom, and every morning when you brush your teeth he sits by the sink with his cup in his mouth. He drinks it out of the cup like he does the bowl, but it is cute to see him shove his face in it
