• This Week in Vimeo - 3/29/10

    Hello!

The last Monday of March can you believe it?

This week I would like to feature a British Vimeo user Adam Pellin Deeve. Adam has been on Vimeo for three years now and has uploaded a lot of great videos. His first video on Vimeo was an instant hit. He does great live action and animation videos.

Hey remember 5X5's? Well there is a whole group for them. Basically it is just five clips of five seconds each strung together. They are really fun to do and great for that extra footage you might have laying around.

This week's channel is called Electrolux. Our new apprentice Taylor describes it as a channel that "explores the experimental, embraces the glitchy side of video and abstraction through compression." Alright, sounds cool to me!

    Love,
    Julia

  • Weekend Project- They Shoot, You Edit

    Hello everyone,

It's time for another sweet, sweet Weekend Project. Here's the challenge-

Have someone you know and trust take a camera of yours and instruct them to shoot what they find to be interesting during the course of an afternoon or so. If they're not familiar with the camera model make sure to instruct them in the basic controls such as on/off, record, zoom, etc. Let them shoot whatever footage they find appealing, try to allow only their perspective to influence the shooting subject matter and technique. Once they're done, your work begins. Take the footage they shoot and try to assemble something worth watching that is no more than 2 or 3 mins in total length. The most interesting video that demonstrates keen editorial choices and technique wins!

Make sure to submit your video to the Weekend Project Group. Please note that the Community Staff will approve videos for inclusion into the Group and will also be selecting the winning videos.

The winner gets a Plus account (for Basic members) or 25,000 HD Embeds (for Plus members). The runner-up gets an extra 1 GB of upload capacity (for Basic users) or 10,000 HD Embeds (for Plus members). Make sure you only submit videos made specifically for this weekend project!

Submissions are due on Tuesday (3/30) at 11:59PM (EST).

Have fun with this and make sure to share with your camera buddy the final edited video.

P.S. Big props to Taylor Gillespie, our new Community Apprentice for inspiring this week's project ;)

  • Win awesome prizes in Canon's Story Beyond the Still contest and watch the latest winning entry!

    Hey Everyone,

If for some reason you've been hiding under a rock on Vimeo for the past few months and you still haven't heard about The Story Beyond the Still contest sponsored by Canon, then you should definitely pay attention because it's awesome. Canon and Vimeo have teamed up to offer anyone with an HD camera the ability to enter an incredibly unique and collaborative filmmaking contest for a chance to win some great Canon prizes and have your work seen by a group of top Hollywood producers and cinematographers.

Basically, the contest is a continually evolving series of seven total chapters that begin and end on a still photograph, with each round beginning with the still image from the previous chapter winner. If you're a little confused, not to worry, we explain it more in depth on our first blog post including the contest rules. The contest already kicked off with a bang for the first round where user Runner Runner saw beyond the still of the first chapter, Vincent Laforet's film "The Cabbie". The winning entry for the first round can be seen below:

Now we're nearing the deadline for chapter three (due March 22nd at midnight) and hopefully lots of you are already working on your entries! If not, that's cool, but you can still participate by watching the entries and voting on your favorites starting March 31st on the contest page.

We encourage you all to enter the next round if you aren't already working on your entry right now, and I speak for all the judges when I say we are very excited to watch your interpretations and see where the story goes!

    Have fun and be creative,

    Blake

  • This Week in Vimeo - March 15

    What's up Vimeans,

I hope you had a chill weekend and you're feeling ready to explore the visual playground that is Vimeo. This week I'd like to call your attention to Vimeo user, Flash Rosenberg.

I had the pleasure of meeting Flash in person last year and I've been a big fan of her work ever since. Flash is an artist that does these amazing animations that are shot while she's drawing and edited to the speed of the narration. It's hard to explain, but watch a few of her videos, and you'll get it!

As you may have heard, Canon released a firmware update for the 5DMarkii. I'm really looking forward to seeing what people add to the 5D Group.

And the Channel I'd like to highlight is called My Room. One of my favorite things when I'm invited to someone's home is to see what's in their room. As Karen, the Channel's creator says, "Our rooms say a lot about us." Give Karen a link to your room video in the shoutbox and she'll be sure to add it.

    Truly,
    Andrea

  • Weekend Project: Dream Description

    Hey Everyone,

As we're a part of one of the most creative communities on the Internet, it's great to think about where all this creativity originates. One place we can look for inspiration is our dreams.

Long-time user, ErickC started the Dream Project just over three years ago. I dug through the Vimeo Project Forum vaults and found a link to his original video!

To participate, go to sleep with your camera by your bedside. Right when you wake up, grab your camera and record yourself recounting your dream in as much detail as possible. When you're finished, upload it and submit your video to the Weekend Project Group. The goal is to capture that moment after waking when you are in between dreaming and starting your day. I find it easiest to remember and talk about dreams if I don't sit or stand up. That's why it's important to keep that camera close! Deadline for submissions is 11:59 EST on Tuesday, March 16.

The Community Staff will watch the entries and decide on a winner. First prize is a Plus account (for Basic users) or 25,000 HD Embeds (for Plus members). The runner-up gets an extra 1 GB of upload capacity (for Basic users) or 10,000 HD Embeds (for Plus members). Make sure you only submit videos made specifically for this weekend project!

    See you in your dreams!
    Andrea

    UPDATE!
The winner is Lulù rotefabrik film with her incredible submission, dream's dreams. The runner up is Jeff Hanel who remembered so much of his dream(s)! Here is his video. Take a few minutes and check 'em out! Congratulations to everyone who participated!

    Hi Everyone!

I hope everyone had a great weekend and is excited it is Monday!

Also, check out this Graffiti group . As you may have guessed it uploads videos that have to do with graffiti. There are some great ones by Blu as well as some other great artists. Definitely worth looking at.

Well, that is everything for this week! Happy Monday everyone!

  • Advanced Statistics for Vimeo Plus!

Today we are releasing Plus Stats, one of the most requested features by you, the Vimeo community.

Stats is a project that has been in the works for a long time here at Vimeo- we knew how important this was to you and we wanted to make sure we got it just right! The new statistics backend has been collecting data for many months now (at a current rate of 175M+ data points a day and growing!) and the end result is a beautiful, intuitive set of analytics like nobody has ever seen. We've built a system that can slice and dice every metric we record on your video: you can easily visualize video loads, plays and finishes, what quality viewers are watching in (SD vs HD), what web sites videos appear on, which countries they are viewed in and played from, who likes or comments on your videos the most, and a whole lot more! You can also look at any of these stats on your WHOLE video collection. How many times have your videos been played in Sweden? It's not a secret anymore!

Plus Stats: Advanced Statistics for Vimeo Plus from Vimeo Staff on Vimeo.

If you are already a Vimeo Plus member, then you will be able to dive right in by going to vimeo.com/stats or by going to 'My Statistics' under 'Me' in the top navigation menu. For basic users, we urge you to check out the demo and get a feel for the product and the types of features we are offering. For new Plus users, it takes about 5 hours for your advanced stats to start showing up.

We hope you like and find this new feature useful. As always, we would love to hear your feedback.

    Love,
    The Vimeo Team

    Yo Vimeo!

For my first blog post in a little while, I have the distinct pleasure of presenting you with the latest installment of ‘This Week in Vimeo’, our weekly showcase of great people, places and things to check out on Vimeo.

    Meet Benoit Millot.

Benoit hails from Paris, France where he works for the production company, Le Potager, which turned a lot of heads recently with the video, A day in PARIS. His video Onirique is also worth checking out. Aside from posting some great content, Benoit watches a ton of videos on Vimeo and I highly recommend adding him as a contact or subscribing to his likes.

Now I’d like to make a special mention to the channel dedicated to my hometown, New York City. For anyone in search of the Big Apple in full HD glory, look no further: New York City HD is the next best thing to actually being there.

We’d also like to give some love to our skating community here on Vimeo and specifically a big shout out to the group, We Heart Downhill, an amazing collection of downhill skateboarding videos. This should be an Olympic sport if it isn’t already.

Lastly, Ryan Hefner, one our developers has put together a really impressive piece of Flash video that I trust you all will appreciate. Push play, sit back and let this video melt your mind like some nacho cheese beneath a hot Mexican sun.

    Have a great week everybody!

    Sam
