Review: Soundwave Festival 2010: RNA Showgrounds, Brisbane, QLD

Brisbane’s rock and roll faithful once again descended on the RNA showground’s to see one of the best ever assembled lineups of punk, rock, metal and hardcore. With such diversity on one bill ( Anthrax, Paramore, Anvil etc) there was a great crowd mix of young all ages kids & old school festies, who hadn’t left the house since the last livid festival.

After tragically missing eagles of Death Metal and my favourite band Taking Back Sunday. I hoped that Dallas & The Alexis on Fire boys would be able to fill the void. They not only filled it they smashed it into next week….The Canadian kings of melodic hardcore, were on fire and nods to Radio Birdman, Midnight Oil ad The Saints simply endeared them more. Critics panned the recent record but with the angst missing on record pumped into the live show half of the mosh pit into a circle pit even Madball would love1

Anvil the other other other Canadian band. A modern day Spinal Tap. They never won an award and well after watching em play. You want to make them one. If you could imagine your Dad and 3 of his dorkiest mates ever mixed with leather and denim…You’re almost there. Check out their Doco…it’s a hoot!

We caught up with Comeback Kid at their hotel in Brisbane and lead singer Andrew Neufeld is one of the nicest down to earth guys you could meet. He was just as excited as I was to meet Anthrax!! Well nothing nice about Andy onstage, ferocious growls and angry facials give way to some of the best lyrics written over drums that fast…All killer no filler!!

Paramore aren’t exactly the heaviest band on the bill. But nonetheless the engineers cranked the decibels by at least 5 measures. The sound was incredible. A wall of guitars set against Haley Cramer’s often fragile often powerful voice gave the front 5 rows industrial deafness. Tracks from their most recent Lp gave the crowd some singalong moments, with “ How did we get here? & Brick by boring brick “ amping up things whilst the stellar “ Feels so Good” from their first record rounded out a great set.

Placebo, back with a new record and a new drummer. A young kid from the states who has breathed new life into this behemoth of a band….Precision playing was the game plan for the lads & wow…not a beat was missed. Meds was given a rework with an acapella intro and the lovely Allison Mosshart joining the lads onstage for backing vocals…Every you every Me, Special K, Bitter End, every song in the set a chart hit. Brian Molko we salute you and here’s hoping Placebo make another 5 records with their new drummer!

Davy Havoc and AFI copped a lot of flak for their last record December Underground. Lots of layers keys and overdubs on the record detracted from what the band stood for and just how great this band is live. So with the bigger moodier anthems out the way ….It was good ole fashioned speed punk. With “What follows;’ and other earlier tracks played at breakneck speed. Mr Havoc even cut off the fringe and swapped the black for a resplendent gold lounge singers suit. Sinatra eat your heart out…If only they played music like this in Vegas.

Trivium, heavy metal legends and a band you’d expect would bring a largely older crowd. Not the case as the front 3 frowns of the pit were stacked with kids. The intensity of the playing and the crowd so great. A circle pit formed around me as I tried to take notes. Bass heavy shredding with sheer brutal lyricism took me back to 1987.…and a more evil one at that!

Jimmy East World, were a late fill in act for the absent My Chemical Romance. A shame. Jimmy Eat World are a fantastic band. But perhaps more at home sat a Big Day Out or Splendor in the Grass. Perfect musicianship played with sheer tenacity showed the World boys were giving it all they had. But unfortunately for them the crowd just wanted to hear number one smash “ The Middle” & soon. Faith No More were on and the main arena was being invaded by FNM fans quicker than fatties at a donut Shoppe.

Faith No More, have released some of the most played, most revered but also most hated songs of the last 20 years. So you either love them or hate them. But as the band arrived onstage in dinner suits ( nowhere near as cool as AFI’s) and greeted the crowd with a lounge tune. The novelty for me had worn out….By all reports FNM played a brilliant show….But lounge music scares me…..Soundwave 2010 done for another year.

All Time LowMy Festival Experience
All Time Low

Your most memorable Festival moment or experience?
Soundwave is amazing but we have always had a blast playing Bamboozle in New Jersey....the crowds have been insane.

Favourite Artist you’ve seen at a Music Festival?
Third Eye blind at bamboozle was insane

What’s your ideal Festival line-up?
Green Day, Blink 182, New Found Glory, All Time Low

What are your tips for attending Music Festivals?
The obvious ones are drink lots of water and bring sunscreen as the days can be long, also maybe a backpack to carry merch? That's what we used to do as kids at the warped tour, other than that just let loose and have a good time. The beauty of festivals is that you can find so many different kinds of artists and maybe even your new favorite band.
