Did you know that ants can be black, brown or red? There are also bout 20,000 species of ants. Ants range in size from 1/25 of an inch to 1 inch long. Did you know the ants antennae are bent which makes them different from other insects. They use their antennae to talk through smell, taste and touch. Ants live in colonies that can range from a few ants to millions of ants. Each ant has a special job of it's own. Queen ants are larger than the other ants and their job is to lay eggs. A colony can have more than one queen. The male ant is the mate and they die soon after mating. The female non-queen ants are called worker ants. They collect food, raise the young, defend the colony and dig tunnels. The most fascinating fact about ants is that they can lift things that are 50 times their weight!
