From the MoviesBuzzing through the skies of Kashyyyk on fluttering ornithopter rotor blades are small helicopters barely large enough to contain the shaggy giants within. The Wookiee ornithopteris a lightweight twin-seated scout craft armed with a tail-gunner blaster used to defend the tree-cities of Kashyyyk against attack. The nimble aircraft were used during the Clone Wars.
From the Expanded UniverseNamed for a dangerous insectoid from the Wookiee colony moon of Alaris, the Raddaugh Gnasp fluttercraft is built by the enterprising Wookiees of the Appazanna Engineering Works. The slight flier is built primarily as a civic security patrol craft, zipping through the dangerous underbrush and lower levels of the Kashyyyk forests in search/rescue missions and perimeter scans for encroaching dangers. It has no armor, and its mostly-open cockpit provides minimal cover for its two occupants. Instead, it relies on its speed and agility to avoid any incoming fire.
Behind the ScenesThe Gnasp flier, or Wookiee ornithopter, was originally called the dragonfly helicopter during the concept phase. In developing Wookiee technology, it was decided it would be a mixture of finely crafted woodwork and polished tubing that resembled brass instruments.
The Wookiee ornithopter was built as a computer-generated model, but for a closeup shot of its tail gunner, a minimal full-size bluescreen mockup of the vessel's gunner seat was constructed at ILM to house a costumed Wookiee performer.
