Daytona 500 starting grid finalized

The Daytona 500 starting grid is now complete.

The lineup was set based in part on last weekend's two-lap, single-car time trial results, locking Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. onto the front row. Results from Thursday afternoon's two 150-mile heat races and last year's final top 35 in owner points completed the starting order.

Thursday's first 150-mile shootout set most of the inside row behind Martin, and the second race set the outside row behind Earnhardt. Bill Elliott, Bobby Labonte, Joe Nemechek and Michael Waltrip advanced based on their overall qualifying speed last weekend. Max Papis, Mike Bliss, Scott Speed and Michael McDowell raced their way into the 500 by being the four highest-finishing drivers outside of the top 35 in last year's owner points.

Much ado about nothing...In this race with restrictor plates starting position is really irrelevant. Wrecks and pit stops and sheer luck are all that really count for placement. Look at previous years winners versus starting positions. I look for Tony Stewart to do the deed.
