Wellens Grabs Four As Saints Thrash Bulls

14th Feb 2010, 10:00am

SAINTS produced a fantastic all-round performance to beat Bradford Bulls 38-6 at the Grattan Stadium.

Paul Wellens, Leon Pryce and James Roby were at the hub of a superb victory which was also built on steadfast defence and great support play.

Saints were outstanding in the first half and deservedly led 20-0 at half time thanks to a Jon Wilkin score and a double from Paul Wellens – with Leon Pryce having a hand in all three.

Wellens backed up his number 6 twice as Saints kept the ball alive on a number of occasions in Bradford’s 20.

They were also excellent in defence with Wellens in particular denying a certain score from Chris Nero.

In the second, Kyle Eastmond went 80 metres – intercepting Matt Orford’s pass – before Paul Wellens grabbed another double to seal a comprehensive victory.

Mick Potter made a late change to his line up with Keiron Cunningham missing the match due to family bereavement. In came Scott Moore, whilst in the backs, Jonny Lomax deputised for Ade Gardner and Gary Wheeler started in place of Sia Soliola.

Bradford made one change from the team that lost to Huddersfield – Elliot Whitehead replacing Glenn Hall in the second row.

Saints started off with a strong set which left Bradford clearing from inside their own 20. And on their next attack, right on the Bulls line, a long ball went out from Jon Wilkin that Lomax just couldn’t pull in at over head height.

On five minutes, Nero was held up on the Saints' line and as the ball went right, Meli scooped up a loose ball and sent Wheeler free. But the ball went to ground as Saints reached half way.

Five minutes later another wonderful tackle from Wellens stopped an almost certain score from Jamie Langley.

But it was Saints that got on the board with a classic try from Jon Wilkin. The ball was kept alive through Puletua and Leon Pryce who managed to feed Wellens after eyeing a small gap 20 yards from the Bulls’ line.

Wellens had Jon Wilkin on his inside and the former Hull KR starlet made no mistake – going under the posts. Eastmond with the extras.

On the quarter of an hour mark, Eastmond tagged on a penalty to make it 8-0.

Pryce was instrumental in Saints second try. Following a wonderful high-ball take from Jonny Lomax, it was worked to Meli who flew 50 yards down the wing. He was clipped by Brett Kearney, but Saints had numbers and from the tackle, Pryce went through a gap and Wellens backed up.

Eastmond making it 14-0 with the boot.

And Pryce combined with Wellens again for the full back’s second of the game. Eastmond 100 per cent with the conversion.

Both Eastmond and Paul Clough went close in the final ten minutes; then with 35 gone, Lomax forced a drop out from Dave Halley. From the restart, Puletua just couldn’t tip down Roby’s grubber through.

Half Time: Bradford 0 Saints 20

Saints had to defend two sets right on their own line within the first two minutes and did so with aplomb, making two last ditch tackles to keep the Bulls out.

But on the 48th minute as the Bulls looked to utilise an overlap, Kyle Eastmond intercepted an Matt Orford pass and went fully 80 metres to go over.

Saints had more defending to do 10 minutes later but kept their line intact with some more steadfast defence and poor decision making from the Bulls.

With around 15 to go, the Bulls piled more pressure on the Saints line but another fantastic tackling stint kept them out.

And boy did Saints make them pay. The ball was kept alive as Saints came up the field – Roby and Moore involved before it was sent wide to Lomax and back inside for Wellens. Eastmond with the extras.

Paul Wellens added yet another late on – Eastmond converting – to bring a close to a very good day for Saints.

Orford added a consolation as the hooter went.

At the home game when some of the popular side booed the saints I was disapointed with their lack of support as we didn't play that bad, in my opinion, just rusty. Glad to see we back at em. Leon is crucial to our overall performance. When he plays well saints are red hot.

Well done Saints, that's more like it! Leon was excellent today, and if he can maintain that standard throughout the rest of the season, then the Saints will go a long way. I take my hat off to you all, keep up the good work cobbers
  • Chris says:
well done for great performance. lets keep it up ad never start a season like last week again. great support which was rewarded by a great team effort on the pitch. Thoughts to King Kieron and his family at this sad time and the lads did you proud
  • Danny says:
Well said john green, any self respecting saints fan would not bother with redvee, they are only in it for their own glory i.e. shouting about wot they are doing for this that and the other, instead of just getting on with it without looking for glory. Good result for saints but lets hope we can keep it going and its not just a flash in the pan. C'MON YOU SUPER SAINTS KEEP IT GOING. Good result for leeds too,(smirk)
