NU disowns statement urging Yar’ Adua to hang on to power
THE Northern Union (NU), on Sunday disassociated itself from the recent comment credited to its youth leader, Alhaji Muhammad Yakubu, urging ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua not to resign even on wheel chair.
The union led by Dr. Olusola Saraki, has disowned its youth leader and has threatened to sanction him after investigation.
The National Secretary of the NU, Colonel Bala Mande, rtd, in a statement in Abuja, declared that the union had never at any point in time, advised the ailing President to hang on to power even on wheel chair.
Colonel Mande, also revealed that the union had commenced investigation into the circumstances that led to the said statement by its youth leader which was prominently reported in a national daily (not the Nigerian Tribune) last Thursday.
He described the statement as a complete breach of the union’s protocol, adding that the NU would not hesitate to sanction Yakubu, the youth leader at the end of the investigation.
According to the statement, the secretary general said: “We wish to disassociate ourselves from the statement as it does not reflect the position or decision of the NU’s Elders Council, which is the only body authorised to speak or issue statements on behalf of the union through the secretary-general.
“The management of the Northern Union hereby wishes to appeal to all our members and the general public to disregard, in totality, all the contents of the said publication.
“Meanwhile, the union has commenced investigation into circumstances that led to the said publication, which is at variance with the union’s position and a complete breach of the union’s protocol, with a view to sanctioning the erring member”, Colonel Mande said.
