1000 Friends of Oregon names new director

    By Eric Mortenson, The Oregonian

    March 19, 2010, 4:35PM

Jason Miner, who cut his environmental activist teeth on legislation that helped protect Steens Mountain, has been chosen as the new executive director of 1000 Friends of Oregon, the state's best known conservation group.

Miner, who most recently worked for The Nature Conservancy in Massachusetts, becomes  the fourth director in 1000 Friends' 35-year history. He replaces Bob Stacey, who resigned last fall to run for Metro Council president.

Although he doesn't officially begin work until May, Miner will make his first appearance Saturday night at the organization's annual Tom McCall Legacy Dinner. 1000 Friends was founded by the former governor and Henry Richmond, an attorney who became its first director. Richmond was succeeded by Robert Liberty, now a Metro councilor, and then by Stacey.

Miner, 39, was enroute to Oregon Friday and unavailable for comment.

1000 Friends has engaged in a lengthy search for a new director. Elisabeth Lyon, chair of the group's board of directors, said in a news release that Miner's background in land-use law and environmental management will be an asset to the organization.

Miner worked eight years in Oregon before going to Massachusetts. He was the Conservation Director for Oregon Trout and worked on the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Act. He served on the Steens Mountain Advisory Council from 2001 to 2005.

In a news release, Miner called 1000 Friends "one of the pre-eminent land-use organizations in the nation" and said he was honored to lead it. He said the state's land-use planning system is "crucial to building a sustainable economy that will provide jobs, create more livable communities and protect the landscape that all Oregonians love."

Miner and his wife, Tara Rae Miner, a native Oregonian, have a 10-month-old daughter. Tara Miner worked five years as managing editor of Orion Magazine.

The Willamette River is a Superfund site, nearly all of the 100+year old forests have been clearcut, the coal fired power plant in Boardman spews massive amounts of pollution that blows directly into the Gorge producing severe acid rain, the coastline views have been destroyed by clearcutting, Sea Lions are being intentionally killed for feasting on Salmon blocked by Dams, the National Forests are bug infested over crowded tinder boxes.....

Oregon's environment is a disgrace. 1000 Friends have failed in their mission.

jory, since you are such an expert on everything that is wrong with Oregon, why don't you run for Governor. Better yet, why don't you come up with some solid feasible solutions and then start acting on them.

You and dtroutma are so full of crap that all you can see is the bad things. If you hate Oregon so much why not go back to California.

I'm glad that someone with Oregon ties is taking this position. It sounds like Jason Miner will continue to work hard to keep Oregon Oregon; exactly what is needed.

There are too many fighting in the opposite direction.

Mayor Sam, what a F.A.G. ( forget accountability guy.)

Accountability - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Accountability is a concept in ethics and governance with several meanings. It is often used synonymously with such concepts as responsibility, ...ethics , hmmm.

What? The acronym F.A.G. offends you? A joining of three words, then taking the first letter of said words, offends? Why?

F.A.G.- forget accountability guy...or Mayor Sam Adams, one in the same.

Now, he could agree to a re-vote, but probably will just continue to ride out his term. I would like to know how many other adults who had sexual relations with a minor got off with out so much as Mayor Sam..F.A.G. Adams.

paperboy, what exactly does Sam Adams have to do with this. You just want to spout off. If you want to put it that way then every politician in the state is a F.A.G

1000 Friends of Oregon is not a "Conservation" group, they're lobbyists.

Most are transplanted Californians who bought their "trophy farms" and want to keep the riff raff away.

Pretending to be concerned about "the environment" is a good way to do that. They moved here so they could live in a park, not a noisy smelly farming or ranching area.

stickaknife, thank you for the effort and time, so gratifying. I'm too lazy to show off in essays of diatribe, don't need to, I said very pointedly, in few words, my peace.
