Growing up: Arbors, trellises and pergolas raise the garden up to eye level

Mar 29, 1:01 PM

If you’re looking for something new this year, maybe you should just grow up. Trellises, arbors and pergolas give your garden a lift, and they can direct the eye, frame views and create privacy. You can use a good-looking trellis to hide the compost pile or block out the neighbors’ patio.

TIPS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD: March 28-April 3

Mar 23, 6:36 PM

•Plant cool-loving annuals such as pansies, violas and snapdragons for an early shot of color. Think foliage, too, like ornamental kale and cabbage. •Do your perennials and shrubs a favor by not removing protective mulch until night temperatures are reliably above freezing, usually late April in this area.

CATALOG SCOUT

Ready? Here comes the floral motif

Mar 29, 1:06 PM

Flower power is cranked to 11 this spring. Catalog Scout found enough buds, stems and leaves to fill the home from floor to ceiling and all the spaces in between. And the garden, too, of course. This season’s floral motifs definitely aren’t shy little wallflowers. Fuchsias, oranges and acid greens, as well as bold black and white, are all part of the petal palette.

Debby Allmon discusses different types of hardwood floors

Mar 23, 6:36 PM

Everyone is talking about prefinished hardwood floors. Would you recommend them, especially for a high-end home you may be putting on the market in the next couple of years? I don’t think they look as good as traditional hardwood floors. What are the pros and cons? The biggest benefit is the ease of installation. These floors are not sanded or finished on site, so there is little mess and no fumes. The wood is coated and finished in the factory, which is a controlled environment where dust particles, temperature and humidity do not affect the application. The “factory finish” provides an extremely durable wear layer. Prefinished hardwood floors also are typically less expensive than site-finished hardwood.

STAFF PICK

Shop and salon at Hammerpress

Mar 23, 6:36 PM

We’ve loved the letterpress cards and prints at Hammerpress in the Crossroads Arts District since those cats were kittens. But now the printing biz has grown into a general store of creative curiosities to make it one-stop shopping for gifts, and we like it even more. Among the new additions are Astier De Villatte of Paris candles; soaps from Herbal Soap Works in Austin, Texas; Maison Bouche chocolates; Swiss Army blankets; artisanal honey; hand-crafted fragrances and tumbleweeds. Yes, blowing in the Western wind tumbleweeds. They make surprisingly chic décor.

Kitchen composter

Mar 16, 6:39 PM

Putting food scraps into the family’s indoor compost container is a habit for Kat Wood. “You’re going to clean that plate off no matter what,” says Wood, who lives in Prairie Village. The question: “Are you going to scrape it into the waste basket or into the composter?”

DESIGN NOTEBOOK

Collectors should search for things they can use, not simply hoard

Mar 26, 11:34 AM

I’ve observed this about people who collect: There is sport in the hunt and discovery. But the object of their affection quickly becomes another relic on the shelf.
