Detroit Lions send fifth-round pick to Seattle for Rob Sims and seventh-rounder

By Tom Kowalski

UPDATED AT 2:24 p.m.

ALLEN PARK -- According to a league source, the Detroit Lions have traded a fifth-round draft choice to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for veteran guard Rob Sims and a seventh-round choice.

The Lions also sent defensive lineman Robert Henderson to the Seahawks as part of the deal. The Lions have been trying to fill their gap at left guard for almost a decade.

Lions spokesman Bill Keenist said the team has "nothing to confirm or announce at this time.'' It is team policy, however, not to confirm trades until the player passes a physical.

Sims was a restricted free agent who was tendered at the fourth-round level, meaning Detroit would have to surrender a fourth-round pick if they signed Sims to an offer sheet. By trading for Sims, the Lions only had to send a fifth-round pick to the Seahawks. The Lions now have no draft picks in the fifth or sixth rounds, but have three picks in the seventh round.

Sims, 26, is going into his fifth NFL season and has already started 34 total games, including 14 last year for the Seahawks. The 6-3, 312-pound guard was a fourth-round pick by the Seahawks in 2006.

By acquiring Sims, it appears the Lions are moving closer and closer to taking a defensive tackle with the second overall pick in the draft. The Lions are expected to choose between Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh and Oklahoma's Gerald McCoy.

Yes! Seriously, how can anyone not be thrilled with what Mayhew has done since taking over?

I remember the day it was announced and it felt like my soul died. I'd been a loyal fan for a long time, but knowing that we were replacing Millen with his understudy instead of with someone proven felt like the final straw for me, and I considered giving up this team.

But since then he's: ripped the Cowboys off in the Roy Williams deal, had an absolutely phenomenal draft last year, signed a couple key free agents this year, and then went out and acquired starter after starter for late round draft picks that likely would've amounted to nothing anyway!

For the first time in a long time I really feel that we're on the verge of turning this thing around!

Go ask wrfetish. She'll tell you why Mayhew sucks. It may not be a good argument but she'll still tell you.

Sweet! Send them less than they asked for AND get another pick in return! I hope this is accurate.

What?

The FRIST story I read said he cost us a 5th rounder and even then I thought we got a bargain. Now I find out we get a seventh rounder as well? Theivery.

I knew all the Okung talk was B.S. This trade confirms it. Lions will be drafting defense first

Gaither will want a huge contract next year (to stay with a losing franchise, maybe even beyond hugh). He'd be great, but it'd have to be super loaded this year (no cap) to make it a long term solution or we lose him next year.

Pouncey or McCourty at 34? Who would you take?

If Okung is the top rated player on their board they'll take him...Okung, sims, cherilus is some good young talent on this line

Good thing though with the sims pick up and the corey williams trade...we still haven't shown our hand which helps us at the negotiating table...Okung or Suh? either would be welcomed additions

Pouncey or Mccourty? you gotta take mccourty at this stage of the game...we don't have anybody at CB besides houston...plus realistically pouncey will probably be gone by #34

Yes Sims and Corey Williams. So much talent on the Seahwaks and Browns, we are obviously just smarter than the rest of the NFL to pick up such "talent". SUPER BOWL HERE WE COME>
