Hobbs, Gocong Sign One-Year Deals

March 30, 2010 | Last Updated: 3/30/10 12:25 PM ET | Comments (12)

Cornerback Ellis Hobbs and linebacker Chris Gocong were each signed to a one-year contract on Tuesday. Both players were restricted free agents this off-season and were tendered the one-year deals by the Eagles. Neither player can now sign with another team. The deadline for teams to sign other teams' restricted free agents to an offer sheet is April 15.

Hobbs was acquired by the Eagles last year in a draft-day trade with the New England Patriots. Hobbs was the lead kickoff return specialist as well as a reserve outside cornerback for the Eagles before suffering a season-ending neck injury against the Dallas Cowboys last November. Hobbs averaged 24.1 yards per kickoff return and had 14 total tackles on defense in 2009. Hobbs started games in each of his first four years in the NFL with the Patriots. In all, Hobbs has started in 49 games (played in 71) and has accumulated 211 tackles, 2.5 sacks and nine interceptions. He has also returned three kickoffs for a touchdown. In 2007, Hobbs set an NFL record with a kickoff return of 108 yards for a touchdown.

Gocong was a third-round draft pick of the Eagles in 2006 and has turned into an excellent run stopper on the strong side. Last year, Gocong started at both strongside and middle linebacker spots, recording 50 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a pair of pass knockdowns. After spending his rookie year on injured reserve, Gocong has started games in each of the past three seasons. In 47 career games (35 starts), Gocong has 203 tackles, 4.0 sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He also has 39 career special teams tackles.

Oh my gosh! There's only 1 year on their contract - we better trade all of them! We can't use a player with only 1 year left on their contract. Trade them all for anything you can get.

stevevan the point of the outside linebacker in our scheme is to cover the tightend. so it was a very good point to say he cant cover them. That is why he was replaced with fokuo at the end of the season because cocong sucked. this was a bad signing.

What about using a good" run stopper" as the backup middle LB,250lbs plus not a bad pass rusher?????????

Mcherson is doing his job knuckleheads. He's not supposed to bash a player after he signs a deal. Thats our job! Quit blaming him for your lack of effort. Is that all you can say about Gocong? He can't cover TE's? I wonder why was he covering TE's in the first place if he isn't matched up well? Should that be the job of the defensive coaching to dictate matchups to the offense and not the other way around?

You hit it Jamie our outside backs cant cover ****! Healthy Bradly can help that though by taking some pressure off the other LB's.

Gocong is a good run-stopper. He just can't cover tight ends to save his life.

Gocong is and excellent run-stopper. He just can't cover a TE to save his life.

This is for Chris...please stop modeling your writing opinions after Spadaro...that EVERY Eagle is the be all end all at their respective position...do you really think Gocong is an EXCELLENT run stopper and still get only a 1 year contract? Realize now that Dave S. is not the Einstein of football talent and tell it like it is.

i agree about gocong playin end i would like to see him be a pass rush specialist not a middle linebacker, hes an ok run stoping linebacker but hes not great, i thiink hed be a great 3d down pass rusher.

Has anybody though about putting Gocong back at DE, where he suceeded at college? He has more bulk now and with what we have a LE could compete.

Gocong... eh good backup but I expect to address LB in 2nd or 3rd rd of the draft. But Hobbs will be a major contributor on Special Teams and I can see him beating out someone for CB depth, possibly even a starter.

Does this mean the Eagles feel secure at LB now? Gogong hasnt lived up to what the eagles thought he might be.
