• Wales` Williams Gets Carter

Wales Mark Williams moved a step closer to winning his first ranking title for four years with a six-frames-to-four win against Allister Carter in the semi-final of the China Open in Beijing.

It is almost four years to the day since the former world number one won a final frame decider against John Higgins in the same tournament.  He will face home-favourite, Ding Junhui in tomorrow's final.

It was a slow start against Carter as the Esses man took the the first two frames.

A major turning point came in frame three when Williams mis-hit a safety shot, potting the penultimate red and clearing with 34 to open his account and reduce thedeficit to just one.

Carter won the last before the interval but when they resumed, Williams began to show the kind of form that took him to two world titles since 2000.

He made three 50-plus breaks in four frames to move within one frame of victory.

Early in the tenth frame, a tense safety battle led to Carter being offered a re-rack.  Carter refused and after a short bout of tactical play, it was Williams who got in and capitalised with a match clinching 68 break.
