Olympic

Canadian Olympic School Program
Presented by RBC, this program offers free downloadable lesson plans, interactive components, contests at various levels and stories about Olympians. This Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) initiative engages students between grades 2 and 12.

International Olympic Committee
As the official website of the Olympic Movement, www.olympic.org is a great source for engaging materials and information items. The site presents up-to-the-minute news feeds and permanent files such as Olympic Express, an 'e-journal' for young people worldwide.

London 2012, On Your Marks!
This comprehensive web site has a wide range of resources available for download by educators and students, including informational fact sheets and Games-related pictures.

Australian Olympic Committee
The Australian Olympic Committee developed a media-rich website with a specific tab for educators. This is an engaging site with a free, online, values-based program that provides access to Olympic-themed resources for teachers and students.

Language Teacher Calendar 2009 from the Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers (CASLT)
The annual CASLT calendar is printed and distributed free of charge to all association members, and is available in both official languages, with components in German, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese. CASLT is pleased to provide teachers across Canada with this electronic copy, which highlights Olympic themes over a 14-month period, ending in February 2010, the month of the opening of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. We encourage teachers to download, print and use the calendar in their classrooms.

The RBC Olympians program hires both Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes as community ambassadors who bring Olympic messages of excellence and leadership to Canadian communities.

Canadian Paralympic Committee, It's The Real Deal
This site has a variety of education resources behind a free, secure login. It includes a teachers-only discussion board and extensive sets of printable lessons by age level and subject area.

International Paralympic Committee (IPC)
The aim of this site is to educate about the ideals and values of the Paralympic Movement, create understanding and positive attitudes towards persons with a disability. The site targets youth between the ages of 6 and 19.

London 2012
This comprehensive website has a wide range of resources, including information and visual materials available for download by educators and students.

Beijing 2008
The Official Website of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. Paralympic sports are often hyperlinked to deeper levels of information underscoring the global change in attitude to Paralympic sports and quickly-the emerging interest in this area.

Chantal Petitclerc is a wheelchair athlete, originally from Quebec. The site covers her sport, life, training, equipment and successes. The information is personal, sophisticated and motivational, covering sports triumphs, her achievements and her personal contributions to society.

Feel the Rush
An extension of the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) website, Feel the Rush offers detailed information about sport for persons with a disability and guides those who are interested to the sport/s that best suit their abilities/interests. Feel the Rush also identifies local and national sporting associations.

The goal of ParalympicSport.TV is to provide content from the Paralympic world including news, interviews, event reports and, of course, the Paralympic Games.

Backcheck: Hockey for Kids, Library and Archives Canada
A unit of four lessons in which Grade 10 to 12 students learn about the importance of hockey to Canadian history and culture. This unit contains detailed guidelines for educators, including learning outcomes/expectations/objectives, suggested criteria for assessment, instructions for classroom use and worksheets.

BC Sports Hall of Fame
This series of lessons aims to motivate children to find the champion within. Lessons act as a springboard for students to find their passion in life and to reach for success.

Biathlon World Cup 2009
The local organizing committee for the 2009 Biathlon World Cup in Whistler has created a teachers’ guide to accompany that event. This downloadable resource contains biathlon-themed lesson ideas in a variety of subject areas for teachers to use in their classrooms.

BONSPIEL! The History of Curling in Canada, Library and Archives Canada
The story of curling in Canada is interpreted by chronological themes that relate the history of curling to the playing surface of the game itself.

Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES)
The mission of the CCES is to promote ethical conduct in sport, including fair play, non-violence, equity and drug-free sport. The CCES provides a wide range of information about helping develop young amateur athletes who model the values of respect and integrity.

Culture, Education, Sport and Ethics Program
Culture, Education, Sport and Ethics Program (CESEP) is an international outreach initiative developed to increase awareness and understanding of what it means to play sports drug-free. The interactive curriculum helps engage teachers and students from different countries in a dialogue on healthy sport.
The curriculum also enables students to communicate their thoughts, perceptions and feelings on sportsmanship, fair play, and drug-free sport across borders and cultures. Children in the program learn through a creative process, putting their ideas into art, essays and poems. Students can then submit their work for inclusion in the second edition of the upcoming book: Culture, Education and Drug-Free Sport: A Child’s Perspective.

Canada Games Days, Canada Games Council
This site includes detailed instructions and handy tips on how to plan and host a Canada Games Day - a full day of sporting activities mirroring the excitement, challenge and camaraderie of the Canada Games.

Canada's Physical Activity Guide for Children and Youth
Available in a one-page, easy-to-read format, the Guide is available for order on its own, or as a pull-out section in a handbook which offers even more information on including physical activity in daily life.

Canadian Sport for Life
Canadian Sport for Life outlines a seven-step program for long-term athlete development, which aims to promote healthy citizens who engage in lifelong physical activity.

Canada Sports Hall of Fame
Canada's Sports Hall of Fame recognizes and honours Canada's sports heroes. The tab "Teach, Play & Learn" has over 30 well-written lesson plans for teachers on topics such as multiculturalism, health, well-being, leadership skill development and sportsmanship.

Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide
A Resource for Educators and Communicators provides background information, tips and tools to complement each recommendation in Canada's Food Guide.
This resource can be used to: Write and talk about the importance of eating well; Develop or advocate for nutrition policies; Create new tools and resources.

Esteem Team
Teachers can book an Esteem Team speaker/motivator to visit their school to inspire students and set achievable goals. Resources include a class poster with preparation questions for the students and a 60-page module of goal-setting lessons, games and techniques.

Go Active! Fitness Challenge
Designed to improve fitness levels in Canadian schools, this site encourages schools to rise to the challenge of generating interest in student-level personal fitness. Participating schools will get a Go Active! Fitness Challenge kit and must test students on a series of six exercises and indicate progress.

Right to Play Canada
By supporting principles of the United Nations (UN) Charter, Right to Play trains community sports leaders in countries affected by war or economic crises. The athletes' stories and actions can be motivational for students.

Sportfit™
SportFit™ is a free, easy-to-use, interactive program to get children and youth interested in physical activity by discovering new sports in a non-competitive environment. SportFit™ identifies sports, matching each participant's personal preferences and physical abilities; it assists children and youth in discovering new ways of being physically active.

SportFit is an initiative of 2010 Legacies Now supported by the Province of British Columbia, the Government of Canada and CTV.

World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)
WADA promotes the principle that athletes have a right to participate in drug-free sports and that doping harms the health of athletes and violates the integrity of sport. WADA’s Education Program contains resources and activities for teachers and coaches to use with young athletes. 

Culture

Acts of Transformation: from War Toys to Peace Art
The program Acts of Transformation: from War Toys to Peace Art asks children and youth to surrender their war toys so that they may be transformed into works of art. The voluntary surrendering of a war toys is a conscious step towards creating a culture of peace. Making a toy that demonstrates violence a passive object is a mindful act. Transforming the object into a work of art is an action that promotes peace. The art inspires others towards a culture of peace.

Cape Farewell
Access a range of materials for schools — ideas on ways classes can take part and get involved during Cape Farewell expeditions as well as learning activities connected to science and art curricula. Blogs and multimedia galleries help engage students while learning about climate change.

Education and Outreach, Contemporary Art Gallery (CAG), Vancouver, BC
The CAG has developed a collection of learning resources that facilitate the integration of contemporary art into a variety of taught subjects for levels K-12, in accordance with the BC Ministry of Education's Prescribed Learning Outcomes.

Foule Faire [FR]
Established by the Francophone School Board of British Columbia, Foule Faire is a large winter gathering of schools in the province. British Columbia’s four main school district regions will organize events consisting of Olympic-style sports activities, Olympic-themed exhibits, features promoting the values of the Olympic Movement, musical entertainment, et cetera. Each Foule Faire gathering will be unique and recreate in its own way the spirit of the Olympic Games. Be a part of the inaugural edition of Foule Faire, scheduled for 2008.

Historica
At this site, teachers can find a vast array of information from a range of Canadian publications. The information ranges from technical terms to information about sports personalities and their achievements, tables of medals and the history of the Olympic Games.

All teacher resource kits are available for free download on this website. Each guide features the life, times and music of a classical composer and includes cross-curricular classroom activities and information about Pinchas Zukerman and the NAC Orchestra.

This site, full of compelling materials, includes a selection of personalities, cultural icons and large volume of media for viewing.

Parks Canada - Teacher Resource Centre
This site offers bilingual classroom-ready educational resources that will enhance your student`s learning experiences about Canada`s national historic sites, national parks and national marine conservation areas.
Lesson plans cover an array of topics like immigration, the fur trade, ecosystems and species at risk.

Vancouver 2010 Educational Kit – Objective sustainable development
A document illustrated with photos and explanatory diagrams to help you study the Games from the angle of sustainable development. This kit offers information on the icons of the Games; analyses the sustainable development initiatives followed; and invites pupils (aged 6-16) to act by proposing projects the whole class can undertake.

Membership to the EcoKids club is free to any Canadian school or youth group. The site provides access to many downloadable resources and a searchable directory.

Environmental Learning and Experience, An Interdisciplinary Guide for Teachers (BC Ministry of Education 2007)
Designed as a support framework to guide teachers in their education planning, the guide also aims to support the implementation of many of the Integrated Resource Packages (IRPs) and is complemented by web resources to support environmental learning in diverse subject areas such as science, social studies and language arts. It's the guide to interdisciplinary practice - using the environment as an organizing theme.

Epic
This website provides comprehensive information and course curricula to help teach students from kindergarten through to the end of secondary school about recycling and plastics, along with short comprehensive tidbits of information on specific subjects such as litter or the different type of plastic codes.

Project Blue Sky is a place where you can connect with your favourite athletes, challenge your friends, tell your story and track your carbon reductions by logging the kilometres you walk, cycle or ride on public transit.
The Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games have a climate goal. Project Blue Sky’s goal is to urge VANOC and its partners towards that goal by collecting one billion kilometres worth of carbon-cutting contributions before March 2010.
