Constituency Profile
The general election in 2001 returned Mr Baldry with a majority of 5,219. In 2005 the Tory majority more than doubled to 10,797, on a 4.5% swing from Labour.
At the election, boundary changes have adjusted the seat to allow for significant population growth by moving part of Kirtlington, and the whole of the Otmoor ward into Henley. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Set in North Oxfordshire, this partly rural constituency has experienced significant urban growth in the expanding towns of Banbury and Bicester, where the majority of the electorate now live.
The seat is popular with commuters who favour the area for its fast transport links to Birmingham, Oxford and London, including rail, and proximity to the M40 motorway.
Business ranges from the agricultural to the industrial. In Banbury farming was long the backbone of the Oxfordshire economy, and Banbury was once home to one of the largest livestock markets in Europe, now closed.
New high-tech companies and elements of the racing car industry have been attracted to Banbury and are a large source of employment.
