Broadland News
Constituency Profile
The Conservatives held the predecessor seat of North Norfolk from 1983 when it was re-established with Richard Ryder winning the seat. At the 1997 general election, Keith Simpson was elected as the Member of Parliament for Mid Norfolk with a majority of 1,336.
He continued to serve the Mid Norfolk seat at both the 2001 and 2005 general elections, increasing his majority on both occasions. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Broadland encompasses 120,000 people spanning from the northern suburbs of Norwich to the north parts of the city, including market towns such as Wroxham.
The new constituency is a mainly residential area. The wards inherited from Mid Norfolk have a prevalence of seasonal work that is tied to the cycles of agriculture and tourism.
Many of the constituents in the Broadland area commute into Norwich. The area is relatively wealthy; there is a combination of young professionals who work in the city and a large proportion of pensioner constituents.
The constituency has incorporated tourist wards such as Reepham, which sits in rural Norfolk and Brundall with its boating industry on the Norfolk Broads. In addition, the wards of Aylsham and Acle are two market towns important for their connections with food processing and food production.
