Constituency Profile
At the election, the seat gains three part-wards from Weaver Vale. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Although part of Cheshire since the 1970s, Halton is very much a Merseyside seat, with the chemical industry playing an important role in both of the main towns, Widnes and Runcorn.
Runcorn, originally developed as a canal port, is more modern than Widnes, and houses a large Liverpool overspill population.
Widnes is best known for its chemical industry and rugby league team. One of the starker creations of the industrial revolution, the town is the terminus for the St Helens Canal.
Runcorn, although originally developed as a port on the Manchester Ship Canal, was designated a new town in 1964. The landscape on its western edge is dominated by mainly chemicals-based heavy industry. A huge INEOS chemicals plant is based there, the seats second-largest employer.
The leading employer in Halton is the Argos call-centre, providing over 2,000 jobs. There is also retail development in Runcorn, at Halton Lea and Trident Park.
