Middlesbrough South & Cleveland East News
Constituency Profile
Dr Ashok Kumar has represented the seat since 1997 and was re-elected in 2005, receiving just about 50% of the vote - although his majority was slightly reduced, at exactly 8,000.
At the election, boundary changes will see part of Beechwood, Brookfield and Kader wards move to Middlesbrough whilst part of Park End and Saltburn wards become fully incorporated within this seat. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The constituency of Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland is surrounded by the north Yorkshire moors and bordered by the North Sea.
Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland is a large and mixed constituency. The Middlesbrough part of the constituency is made up nearly equally of prosperous owner-occupier suburbs, and large peripheral council estates which lie on the southern outskirts of Middlesbrough.
The section within the borough of Redcar and Cleveland is made up of the large market town of Guisborough, which acts as the centre core of the constituency; the Victorian resort seaside town of Saltburn and a number of small villages and towns which grew up as part of the ironstone mining boom of Victorian years is collectively known as East Cleveland.
The seat's economy is reliant on a number of industries, notably farming and chemicals. Most constituents work in and on urban Teesside either in Middlesbrough or Stockton or at the large chemical and steel plants that line the river Tees. The largest employers in the constituency, beside the public services, are Corus troubled Skinningrove steelworks and the Boulby potash mine.
