Constituency Profile
In 2001 the Lib Dems polled more than 50% of the votes. In 2005 their vote fell by almost 10% but Mr Sanders retained the seat with a majority of 2,029.
Boundary changes at the election see parts of the Blatchcombe and Churston-with-Galmpton wards move to Totnes, while Clifton-with-Maidenway comes fully into Torbay. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
The third most densely populated area in the South West, the small Devon constituency is centred on Torquay and most of Paignton.
Together with Brixham (in the Totnes constituency) the three coastal towns are known as the English Riviera. This is a huge retirement area. Low incomes also reflect the fact many constituents work in the hotel and catering industries, the retail and health sectors and social services.
