Constituency Profile
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
The western division of Wales's newest city has enjoyed more inward investment and is generally better-off than its neighbouring seat.
The constituency takes in the main shopping centre of the city and the docklands area. It also takes in countryside and villages that wrap round the west and north of the city.
The economy was based on steel and aluminium works which have now closed. The expansion of the service sector, in particular the hospitality industry, has helped to transform the economy. The local trend is best summarised as manufacturing industries in a slow gradual decline placed against rapid expansion in the service sector.
Civil Service restructuring has benefited the area. The National Statistics Office and the Prison Services shared service centre are located here.
The University of Wales, Newport, was granted full university status in 2002. It is now one of the fastest growing universities in the UK.
Newport hosts the Ryder Cup golf tournament in 2010. The Celtic Manor Resort (where the event takes place) increasingly attracts major conferences and has hosted a number of high profile events such as the All Star Cup as dress rehearsals for the Ryder Cup.
