Constituency Profile
Hooson's sudden death in 1985 led to a by-election that was won by the SDP/Liberal Alliance's Richard Livsey.
Livsey held the seat at the 1987 general election by 56 votes over the Tories. In 1992 he was unseated by Conservative Jonathan Evans, who had a majority of 130. Richard Livsey regained the seat in 1997 with a majority of 5,097.
In the 2001 general election the new Liberal Democrat candidate, Roger Williams, had his majority cut to 751 but this rose to 3,905 in 2005.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
The largest seat in Wales geographically, making up the southern part of the large county of Powys. Powys is the most rural and sparsely populated county in England and Wales. There is very little manufacturing industry.
As a rural seat, farming is important to the local economy. Tourism is also important, particularly in the Brecon Beacons. Indeed, many farms have tried to combine the two key industries under the Farm Tourism Scheme.
It is a very beautiful constituency, containing the Brecon Beacons National Park, market towns Brecon, Builth Wells and Radnor and the spa town of Llandrindod Wells.
The Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, the biggest agricultural show in Europe, is held each year in Builth Wells.
The scenic nature of the seat makes it an attractive place for people to retire to. This is signalled by the seat having one of the highest proportions of its population of pensionable age in Wales.
