Ricky Martin Comes Out Gay

Ricky Martin came out on his website Tuesday.

The singer, whose sexuality was the source of much speculation in his "Vida Loca" heyday, posted a long statement that ended with, "I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am."

Martin welcomed twin sons via a surrogate in 2008 and has largely stepped away from the limelight to be a dad.

The statement in its entirety, which he posted in Spanish and English, is below.

IN FULL:

A few months ago I decided to write my memoirs, a project I knew was going to bring me closer to an amazing turning point in my life. From the moment I wrote the first phrase I was sure the book was the tool that was going to help me free myself from things I was carrying within me for a long time. Things that were too heavy for me to keep inside. Writing this account of my life, I got very close to my truth. And thisis something worth celebrating.

For many years, there has been only one place where I am in touch with my emotions fearlessly and that's the stage. Being on stage fills my soul in many ways, almost completely. It's my vice. The music, the lights and the roar of the audience are elements that make me feel capable of anything. This rush of adrenaline is incredibly addictive. I don't ever want to stop feeling these emotions. But it is serenity that brings me to where I'm at right now. An amazing emotional place of comprehension, reflection and enlightenment. At this moment I'm feeling the same freedom I usually feel only on stage, without a doubt, I need to share.

Many people told me: "Ricky it's not important", "it's not worth it", "all the years you've worked and everything you've built will collapse", "many people in the world are not ready to accept your truth, your reality, your nature". Because all this advice came from people who I love dearly, I decided to move on with my life not sharing with the world my entire truth. Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions.

If someone asked me today, "Ricky, what are you afraid of?" I would answer "the blood that runs through the streets of countries at war...child slavery, terrorism...the cynicism of some people in positions of power, the misinterpretation of faith." But fear of my truth? Not at all! On the contrary, It fills me with strength and courage. This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day. To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids where born with. Enough is enough. This has to change. This was not supposed to happen 5 or 10 years ago, it is supposed to happen now. Today is my day, this is my time, and this is my moment.

Story continues below

These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn't even know existed.

What will happen from now on? It doesn't matter. I can only focus on what's happening to me in this moment. The word "happiness" takes on a new meaning for me as of today. It has been a very intense process. Every word that I write in this letter is born out of love, acceptance, detachment and real contentment. Writing this is a solid step towards my inner peace and vital part of my evolution.

I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.

Its no surprise that RM is a homosexual. His family is pentecostal, so maybe this was a deterent. The Spanish culture makes it very difficult for a person to express that they are gay. Maybe he feared the response his Latin fans would have. I think he should have never come out. If its so obvious that he is gay, why does he need to write an official statement? Who are we to judge, let God judge him, just like He will be judging all of us.

this topic has done already, as time marches on. but your comment that , " the Spanish culture makes it very difficult for a person to express that they are gay.", is a slightly understating the facts. RM was not just a star in the Latino culture, he was pretty well known in many cultures, moreover he was what some may call an international star. so the fact that he took this long to come out was not just because of the Latino culture, it's because homophobia is an international problem. just any gay person from any culture how difficult it is to be gay.

and please don't say that it's easier in this country, because that's just a myth. just because people are saying they don't care that RM is gay, does not mean that the same would stop a gay bashing on the any given street in anywhere USA.

Sorry Ricky, that really wasn't a surprise.... Anna Paquin's news... a little surprising but hey as long as you're happy it doesn't matter.

Now that Ricky gotten that off his chest maybe he'll go back to shaking his "bon-bon?!?!" Cause gay or not he's still yummy to watch!

Homosexuality seems to be on the rise - I maybe wrong but there was an article that stated that the use of too many chemicals in our food supply and water are causing hormonal changes in men as well as women leaving them with insufficient amounts of progesterone or testestarone.

Also rising is the level of sterility in young people.

Re: Ricky Martin. I have little if any patience for people who hide behind their being bisexual. Either take a stand or just shut up. I've been out since my mid-teens ( am now 53 ) and it wasn't easy but after I came out, I no longer felt the weight of the world on my shoulders.

Depends on where you live, who you are associate with, and what you do for a living. It's not a perfect world. You have to balance between conforming and standing for your rights. If you need your parents for financial support, and you know telling them you are gay or bisexual is going to make them kick you out of the house, it's retarded to try.

It's not hard to tell if you have liberal or bigot parents. Talk to them about issues. When I hear story about parents kicking kids out of the house for being gay, it is sad yes, but I can't believe the kid would not know that the parents would be the type to disown their kids over something like that before hand. If you don't know your parents... who do you know?

its not that easy for others...that's great that you found that courage to come out in your teens but to some it's hard...You can just imagine the unhappiness that they go through....

Close, it was 'fortunate son" but "fortunate one" is in the lyrics, which I love. it got a surge in popularity during the second Bush years:

Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
Ooo, they’re red, white and blue.
And when the band plays hail to the chief,
Ooo, they point the cannon at you, y’all!

It ain’t me, it ain’t me, I ain’t no senator’s son, Son.
It ain’t me, it ain’t me; I ain’t no fortunate one. No.

Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, don’t they help themselves, y’all!
But when the taxman comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale.

It ain’t me, it ain’t me, I ain’t no millionaire’s son. No, no.
It ain’t me, it ain’t me; I ain’t no fortunate one. No.

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooo, they send you down to war, y’all.
And when you ask them, how much should we give?
Ooo, they only answer more! More! More! Y’all.

It ain’t me, it ain’t me, I ain’t no military son, Son.
It ain’t me, it ain’t me; I ain’t no fortunate one, one.
