Shell Stitch Baby Cardigan and Hat

Finished chest sizes: 20, 22, 24

Materials
Yarn: 3 (4, 4) balls
Crystal Palace Bunny Hop
Bunny Hop is a super soft blend of microfibers and 8% angora, see colors by clicking link Bunny Hop.
Hook: Crystal Palace Bamboo Size G crochet hook, 3 buttons

Gauge: 7 dc = 4, 2 repeats of shell/post st pattern = 3.5
Note: The cardigan is worked from the neck down. Ch 2 at beg of row counts as a dc.

Abbreviations:
Front post (FP)
- insert hook around post of next dc from front to back, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull thru 2 loops, yo, pull thru 2 loops.
Back post (BP) - insert hook around post of next dc from back to front,
complete as for front post.
Shell - (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same dc.

Cardigan Instructions
Ch 43 loosely, turn.
1- Dc in 3rd ch from hook and next 7 ch, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch; dc in next 5 ch, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch; dc in next 12 ch, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch, dc in next 5 ch, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch; dc in last 8 ch.
2- Ch 2, turn. Front post (FP) around each of next 2 dc, skip 2 dc, shell in next dc, skip 2 dc, FP around next 2 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in corner sp, (left front) *FP around next 2 dc, skip 2 dc, shell in next dc, skip 2 dc, FP around next 2 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in corner sp, * (left sleeve) (FP around next 2 dc, skip 2 dc, shell in next dc, skip 2 dc) twice, FP around next 2 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in corner (back) Rep between * (right sleeve)

Stop here for 6-month size. Fasten off. Turn and start sleeves. Continue thru row 10 for 12 and 18 month sizes.

10- Ch 2, turn. (FP around next 2 post sts, shell in next shell) twice, FP around next 2 post sts, dc in next 5 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in corner, *Dc in next 5 dc, FP around next 2 post sts, (shell in next shell, FP around next 2 post sts) three times, dc in next 5 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in corner* Dc in next 5 dc, FP around next 2 post sts, (shell in next shell, FP around next 2 post sts) four times, dc in next 5 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in corner, Repeat between * for right sleeve, Dc in next 5 dc, FP around next 2 post sts, (shell in next shell, FP around next 2 post sts) twice, dc in top of turning ch. Stop here for 12 month size. Fasten off. Turn and start sleeves. Continue thru row 11 for 18 month size.
11- Ch 2, turn. (BP around next 2 post sts, shell in next shell) twice, BP around next 2 post sts, dc in next 6 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner, *Dc in next 6 dc, BP around next 2 post sts, (shell in next shell, BP around next 2 post sts) three times, dc in next 6 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner* Dc in next 6 dc, BP around next 2 post sts, (shell in next shell, BP around next 2 post sts) four times, dc in next 6 dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in corner, Repeat between * for right sleeve, Dc in next 6 dc, BP around next 2 post sts, (shell in next shell, BP around next 2 post sts) twice, dc in top of turning ch. Fasten off. Turn. Sleeves: Attach yarn with sl st to space at edge of sleeve. Ch 2, work in established pattern across sleeve to next corner, dc in corner. Ch 2, turn. Continue working on these sts only until sleeve measures 5 (6, 7) inches. Fasten off. Work second sleeve in same manner.

Body: Attach yarn with sl st to top of turning ch, ch 2. Ch 2, turn. Work post sts around post sts, shells in shells, and dc in each dc to first corner, dc in corner sp, skip sts of sleeve, dc in next corner sp, work dc, post sts and shells across back to corner, dc in corner sp, skip sts of sleeve, dc in next corner, work to end. Ch 2, turn. Work as established until piece measures 6 (7, 8) inches. Fasten off.

Front Bands: With right side facing, attach yarn with sl st to first st at bottom edge of right front. Ch 1, sc in same place, work 2 sc under each turning ch across front, sc in st at end. Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc to end. Work 2 more rows sc for 18-month size only. Buttonhole row: Ch 1, sc in same place, and each sc until 19 sc remain to top of neck. (Ch 2, skip 2 sc, sc in next 6 sc) twice, ch 2, sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Work 2 (4) more rows sc in same manner, working 2 sc in buttonhole spaces.
Fasten off. Work left front band in same manner, eliminating buttonholes. Do not cut yarn.
Neck Band: Ch 1, turn. Work sc across top of neck bands and in each st around neck. Ch 1, turn. Work 2 more rows sc. Fasten off.

Hat
Beginning at top, ch 6, join with sl st to form ring. Ch 1, work 7 sc in ring. Join with sl st to top of beg sc.
1- Ch 2, work 2 dc in ea sc around. Join with sl st to top of beg ch 1.
2- Ch 2, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc* around, 2 dc in last dc*, join with sl st to top of beg ch 2. (14 dc)
3- Ch 2, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc* around, join with sl st to top of beg ch 2. (21 dc)
4- Ch 2, Dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc* around, join with sl st to top of beg ch 2. (28 dc)
5- Ch 2, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc* around, join with sl st to top of beg ch 2. (35 dc)
6- Ch 2, dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc* around, join with sl st to top of beg ch 2. (42 dc)
7- Ch 2, dc in next 5 dc, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next 6 dc, 2 dc in next dc* around, join with sl st to top of beg ch 2. (49 dc)
8- Ch 2, dc in next 6 dc, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next 7 dc, 2 dc in next dc* around, join with sl st to top of beg ch 2. (56 dc) Stop here for 6-month size. Go to shell pattern. Work row 9 for 12 and 18 month sizes only.
9- Ch 2, dc in next 7 dc, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in next 8 dc, 2 dc in next dc* around, join with sl st to top of beg ch 2. (63 dc)
Begin shell pattern: Ch 2, FP around next dc, *skip 2 dc, shell in next dc, skip 2 dc, FP around each of next 2 dc*. Repeat between * around, ending skip last 2 dc, join with sl st in top of beg ch 2. (There will be 8 shells on 6-mo. size, 9 shells on 12 and 18 mo sizes.)
Repeat this row 8 (9. 10) times more. Fasten off.
