Constituency Profile
At the election, Church ward is now entirely within this seat's boundaries, while the part-ward of Unsworth is lost to Bury South.
To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Bury is one of the more prosperous former textile towns in Lancashire, and has in recent years reinvented itself as part of the Manchester commuter belt. It was able to buck the trend of post-textile decline because it had other industries like paper-making, heavy and light engineering, and chemicals to fall back on.
As well as Bury itself, the seat includes other small towns to the north, such as Tottington and Ramsbottom.
Commuters use the M62 and M66 motorways that criss-cross the seat, while the MetroLink tram operates a frequent service from Bury centre through Manchester city centre to Altrincham. Manchester Airport is half an hour away by road.
Tourism has come to the area since the opening of the East Lancashire Railway. Bury is also a popular shopping centre with its famous open and indoor markets and the Mill Gate retail complex. The massive Warner Village Cinema Complex at Pilsworth was the first of its kind in the country.
At the 2001 census, about 5% of the population identified themselves as Asian.
