The Itawamba Agricultural High School’s parent-sponsored prom is back on, and it will now be held at the Fulton Country Club, the club’s manager said.
Fulton Country Club manager Stanley Ramey said that the event would be held at the club Friday night.
It had originally been set for the Tupelo Furniture Market but was canceled Monday night, multiple parents confirmed. Parents would not confirm for the Daily Journal or Itawamba County Times why the event was first cancelled.
Lori Byrd, who served on the parent organizing committee that planned the canceled event, told The Clarion-Ledger newspaper it was called off because, "there are a lot of people involved and they don’t want to get sued."
School board attorney Michele Floyd said that same-sex dates would be allowed at the prom that will be held at the country club.
Parents announced they would put on the prom after the school district relinquished its sponsorship earlier this month. The district announced it would not hold the prom after receiving a letter from the ACLU of Mississippi demanding it allow senior Constance McMillen to attend with her girlfriend and to wear a tuxedo to the dance.
The ACLU filed a preliminary injunction to force the district to sponsor the prom. Senior U.S. District Judge Glen H. Davidson ruled March 23 that the district did not have to sponsor the prom but that it did violate McMillen’s First Amendment rights.
Christine P. Sun, a lawyer with the ACLU who represented McMillen said that when McMillen tried to buy a ticket on Monday to the parent-sponsored prom, she was told that the deadline to buy tickets had passed on Saturday. But a parent told McMillen to leave her phone number and the parent would get a ticket for her, Sun said.
Sun also said that McMillen got a lot of angry text messages Tuesday morning after the prom had been originally canceled.
Could have got more media time .......she hoped !
And she has no date dang
Mainly she garnered support from people ,like VU,who are filled with hate and call everyone names in every post ,and gosh ,does it have to be so many posts . lol. What a joke.
Of course its easy to see VU is like obami and knows better than anyone else .
i dont understand how that can stay hidden. all the kids at school much know who it is.
This was not a media created image, the school board through their actions caused the confirmation of that image of Mississippi.
I submit to you that if they had just let the kids go to the prom wearing whatever they want, with whoever they wanted, we wouldn't even know there was a lesbian student at the school.
But the bigoted school board decided to handle this situation in the worst possible way they could and brought all this negative attention on to Mississippi.
Of course all the Bible thumping of the locals didn't help either.
Like Jeff Foxworthy once said "The reason everyone thinks rednecks are stupid is because we can't keep the stupidist amongst us off of the TV."
The country's media has blown this situation way out of proportion.

I especially love this quote:
"Jacob Brooks Unemployed
"Obviously, you can't have a lesbian couple at prom. Their softball cleats would ruin the gym floor."
Now that's funny right thar! I don't care who yee are!!

Better start laughing at all this, otherwise break out the dueling pistols & sabers...
The Onion also has a great one about the ACLU defending the Nazis right to burn down the ACLU...
They managed to confirm to the whole world that Mississippi really hasn't progressed much in the past 50 years. Rather it's bigotry is just directed in a different direction now.
Just a question!!
She knew what she was doing when she challenged the school and wanted it her way and have her 15 minutes of fame. And what the point of fighting for this if her girlfriends parents don't even approve? She can't be thinking of others around her, she's thinking of herself and that's all.
Now she gets special treatment because she missed the deadline to buy tickets to the prom? Does every student that missed the deadline still get a ticket too? I have a feeling the answer is no.
As far as the hateful texts the next morning after the canceling of the prom, it was pretty much expected. She ruined the privilage for every other student at that school because she didn't agree with the rules.
