Entrepreneurship on the MBA / EMBA Programme

Entrepreneurship Project

The Entrepreneurship Project is an integral part of the one-year MBA and two-year EMBA programme at Oxford University’s Saïd Business School. It challenges participants to develop a complete business plan and present it to a panel of invited venture capitalists and other practitioners. Completed plans must  be attractive to the professional investor. The numbers must add up, patents be  in place, the competition must have been understood and a winning strategy  developed. If you already run a business, this is a great chance to develop new  products or business models in a safe environment.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation classes & electives

The Oxford MBA / EMBA gives participants the chance to customise their learning experience to meet individual career goals and aspirations. Electives allow participants to specialise in certain subject areas to either strengthen their current skill set or improve on their weaker areas while gaining depth and breadth across the range of management and business disciplines. Elective courses with an entrepreneurial element offered in the recent past include: capital raising  techniques, entrepreneurial finance, technology and innovation strategy, and private equity.

Strategic Consulting Projects

Towards the end of their course, MBA students have the option to undertake an eight-week consultancy project, in partnership with sponsoring organisations. Building on the skills learned during the course as well as the considerable experience acquired in their earlier careers, the projects give students the opportunity to demonstrate to the examiners their ability to apply their management skills. It also gives employers an opportunity to assess the calibre of possible recruits. Entrepreneurially minded students are encouraged to initiate projects themselves. Further information about such projects can be obtained from the School’s Projects Office

Said Business School Venturefund

The SBS Venturefund originated from the generous gift of Sir Philip Green, one of the UK’s leading retail entrepreneurs, and David Bonderman (Texas Pacific Group) to fund the best entrepreneurial business ideas from the School’s students. The £1million fund aims to promote the School’s students’ education in research, due diligence and other aspects associated with investing in early-stage businesses. In 2009/10 the fund will be in its fourth round and has invested into several portfolio companies. The process of marketing the call for entries, selecting proposals, mentoring finalist teams, due diligence, negotiating the agreement and monitoring the investee companies is managed by a student committee drawn from the current MBA class.

“It was great to work with the SBS Venturefund team in 2008 on the MoBank investment. The selection process was an unforgettable experience and we look forward to the benefits of being part of the SBS network through the forthcoming months.”
Dominic Keen, Founder, MoBank
