Bicester is situated just north of the City of Oxford, and is home to HQ Bicester Garrison, 23 Pioneer Regiment, DSDC, DCTA, and DSDA. It is surrounded mainly by small villages its local amenities are limited, a wider range of shopping and entertainment facilities can easily accessed in Oxford, Banbury, Aylesbury, Milton Keynes. London is also within an hour travelling either by car, train or coach.
15 Army Education Centre is located at Bicester; which has an Army Learning Centre, Library. There are many courses on offer. This facility is available for all Serving Personnel and their dependants to use, as well as Civil Servants working in the Garrison area. The Garrison has a Gym which has a large indoor gym which is use for Football, Badminton, Circuit training, and aerobics; the Gym also has various Aerobic machines and free weights. There is also an indoor heated Swimming pool, this is open for lane swimming during the day and family swim times after school. Future plans are to open a swim school and Aqua aerobics classes. The Community centre hosts, Mums and Tots, Youth Club, Music Train. Tumble Tots.
There is one fully furnished contact house available for hire at Bicester; this is to provide short term accommodation, on a priority need basis. There is just one main SFA area for Bicester for both Soldiers and Officers. This is in the village of Ambrosden. This is located approx 2.5 miles from 23 Pioneer Regt and HQ Bicester Garrison. There are 298 married quarters. The allocations office for Bicester is based at High Wycombe and can be contacted on Tel: 01494 495511. The local DE (HD) office can be reached on Tel: 01869 256329. Single Living Accommodation At St George's Barracks, HQ Bicester Garrison, there are 5 blocks of accommodation behind the wire for Junior Ranks; 3 for personnel who are on Bowman courses and 1 Block for transit accommodation; contact: WO2 Brotherton - Sgt Maj of the Bowman Training Centre on Tel: 01869 257880. There is 1 block for accommodation for those who are posted to HQ Bicester Garrison; contact the QM's Dept on Tel: 01869 257738. At 23 Pioneer Regt, St David's Barracks, there are 8 blocks in total behind the wire; 7 of these have been slammed providing 139 en-suite rooms, in 1 block, 1 wing is female accommodation. There are 2 pre-schools and one local Foundation/Primary school for Families living in the Ambrosden Married Quarter area. There are also 2 Secondary Schools in Bicester.
Bicester has 2 local train stations. Bicester Town provides trains into Oxford. Bicester North is on a main line to London and Banbury. Bus and Train timetables are available from the HIVE. Oxford also has a very good Park and Ride Scheme Due to being very close to the M40. Many Airports - London Heathrow, Luton; Stansted, Gatwick and Birmingham International are also easily reached, most within an hour.
The quartering area of Ambrosden has a local Spar shop, as well as a Post Office and small shop. The main supermarkets in Bicester are Tesco and Somerfield. Bicester town centre has a few “big name” stores: Argos, Woolworths; Dorothy Perkins; Homebase. Larger stores are available within Aylesbury, Banbury, Oxford and Milton Keynes
Bicester has a good selection of places to eat out, ranging from Pub Food to restaurants offering a wide selection of menus.
There is a Medical and Dental Centre located at St Georges Barracks for all serving personnel. For families living in the Ambrosden Quarter area, Ambrosden Surgery is the local Doctors and is attached to a larger practice in Bicester. There are various Dental Practices in Bicester however few are taking on new patients. Oxford and Banbury have hospitals have hospitals both with A&E departments.
