Constituency Profile
In 1997 current MP Vernon Coaker, a former teacher, took the seat for Labour. In 2005 his majority was 3,811 votes.
At the election, the Boundary Commission has made only minor changes to the existing boundaries of the Gedling constituency. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
Gedling is a relatively affluent constituency to the north and east of Nottingham. Much like suburbs in the west of Nottingham, Gedling has seen major changes in the economic focus of the area in the last 15 years.
Gedling colliery was a major employer in the area until its closure in 1991. Similarly, the traditional textile industry (particularly lace) for which Nottingham was once famous, while still in existence, is no longer the mass operation it once was.
The service industry has stepped in to replace many of the jobs lost through the decline of manufacturing and coal mining, with distribution centres and supermarkets established in the area. Boots, based in the nearby Broxtowe constituency, is another major employer.
