Penrith & The Border News
Constituency Profile
Penrith and the Border remains a vast constituency despite the latest boundary changes, under which it lost the Marsh and Wampool wards to Workington along with part of Waver ward. Part of Stanwix Urban and all of Wetheral Ward were lost to Carlisle. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
This massive northern Cumbrian constituency stretches from the Solway Firth to the Yorkshire Dales, from the Scottish border at Gretna Green to Helvellyn in the heart of the Lakes. Towns include Penrith and Appleby.
Penrith and the Border is sparsely populated with a population of around 67,000 and an economy predominately based in agriculture.
Lakes, forests and fells combine to offer some of the country's most beautiful scenery and tourism is a major industry.
The M6 motorway and the West Coast main railway pass through the constituency between Scotland and the South. The A66 Trans-Pennine trunk route provides the east-west axis between Teesside and Cumbria's west coast. The scenic Carlisle-Settle railway provides access to Leeds and Yorkshire.
