Steven Hammon: Adder, Card Game Rules.


The rules for "Adder" go as follows:

Goal:

To win the game you have to get all your cards out.

Cards:

As follows, Ace 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 Jack Queen King Ace 2 3 4 5 etc. So the rank clicks back over.

There are four Jokers and these are wild cards. Once they are put down they are one higher or one lower then the card you through it on. No matter who’s turn it is. These should be saved for a winning maneuver.

There are Four piles. Three face up discard piles that start off empty, and one face down pick up pile made by the left over cards after the deal.

(1). Every time you throw a card out it has to be one higher in rank or one lower in rank, then the card you throw it on.

Eg.

Ace 2 3.

2 Ace 2.

King Ace King.

3 2 Ace.

King Ace 2.

(2). You Must move three cards. Either from your hand to the piles or from the pick up pile to your hand.

Eg.

Throw out none, pick up 3.

Throw out 1, pick up 2.

Throw out 2, pick up 1.

Throw out 3, pick up none.

You can pick up if you don’t want to throw out. You can throw out on any pile in any order as long as the card you throw out is one higher in rank or one lower in rank, then the card you throw it on. Once you start picking up you end your go and must pick up the remaining about.

Start:

Each person starts with nine cards.

Game play is in a clockwise direction.

The first person creates the three piles by throwing out the three bad cards. It's best to take up all three spots because you can throw anything in those spots. With team play you can leave spots open for your teammate.

Eg. The first person to play their cards (the next person after the previous winner) may have this hand. Ace King Ace, 3 4 5, 4 8 10. This hand has two sets of three. (Ace King Ace and 3 4 5.) These can be thrown onto one card. The (4 8 and 10) are the bad cards and would be thrown out first.

You can change the order of your sets anytime during the game to say "Ace King Ace, 4 5 4, 3 8 10" or "Ace King Ace, 4 3 4, 5 8 10"

Teammates look at each other’s cards and plan on how to help each other. If one of the team gets all their cards out then that team wins.

The first person in the loosing team will start first.

When the pick up pile is empty the discarded cards under the three face up piles are reshuffled and placed as the pick up pile.

Tips:

Throw on piles to set your self up for more chances to get out the cards you want.

Eg. You have all 4's 5's and 6's. Bring the Jacks and 10's and 9's down and the Ace’s and 2's up. Like with the piles on 2 King and Jack. You throw an Ace onto the King to bring it up to the 4 instead of on the 2.

You can count the cards and know that if the pick up pile is just about empty and no 4's 5's or 6's have been thrown out then you know they are in your opponent’s hand. You can then not give them the chance to throw them out.

This game is based on luck but you want to manipulate it so that you have a better chance of getting your cards out. Create options for yourself. Lead the piles closer to the cards you want to get out.

Use your Jokers to give you maximum chance of winning. Use them when you know you have a big chance that you can win with the cards you have. You may have 5 4 5, 6 Joker 10. There may be an 8 10 jack on the discard piles. Throw the 10 on the Jack then the Joker on the 8 and then the 6 on the Joker. If no one throws on the 6 then the 5 4 5 set can go straight down onto the 6 for a win.

Scoring:

Starting at 1000 points or so.

When you enter a game a point is taken from your score and adds to the game pool. (3 players, 1 point from each, 3 points for the winner.) (2 players, 1 point from each, 2 points for the winner.) (4 players, 1 point from each, 4 points for the winner.) (4 players, 2 teams, 1 point from each, 4 points for the wining team distributed evenly to the team players.)
