ALICE IN CHAINS Guitarist Says 'There Are Thoughts' Of A New Album - Apr. 13, 2010
ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell has told MTV News that the band is contemplating making a new album in the foreseeable future.

"There are thoughts," Cantrell said of heading back into the studio. "We'll see how far we get. Staying in the moment is a good way to live and we certainly hope that that happens. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't [happen]."

When asked if the SOUNDGARDEN and STONE TEMPLE PILOTS reunions and PEARL JAM also being on the road and FOO FIGHTERS returning to the studio means that alternative rock is coming back, Cantrell replied, "I don't think it ever left. Yeah, there's a lot of activity from bands that were slugging it out in the '90s, us being one of them. But I think the thing that gets forgotten is all those guys were doing music all along. ... It's not like anyone quit doing stuff and we just thought, 'Hey, it's a good time to start doing it again.' We just continued to make music. But it's kind of nice because I love all those bands."

ALICE IN CHAINS has extended its current North American tour into mid-May, with a new leg of dates beginning on April 15 in Portland, Maine and ending on May 23 in Camden, New Jersey. The band is touring behind its 2009 comeback effort, "Black Gives Way To Blue", which has sold 407,000 copies in the United States since its September release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"Black Gives Way To Blue" is the band's first new studio set in 14 years and features singer William DuVall's recording debut with the group. He began singing with them live in 2006. Original frontman Layne Staley died in April 2002.

I wish I liked their new CD. But it was too boring for me. But i am still a fan. hopefully they will pick up the pace on the next album. They are a much better band than what they just released. Thats just me. And William Devull or Layne Staley (not being on the album) has nothing to with me not liking it. William is a talented musician and an asset to AIC.

a new record would be very welcomed. 'black gives way to blue' was fantastic, and very authentic, but clearly transitional and had some flaws in design.

i'd also like william to be at the front of the mix. the album was mixed like cantrell was the lead singer, which is fine for the in-between album, but lets get a record that sounds like how this band is now. and more songs with duvall singing lead on his own.

and when there are vocal harmonies, the parts should be equal in volume. they're lost otherwise and are the most signature part of the AIC sound for me.

i would also like a faster, more upbeat single like 'we die young' or 'dam that river'.

to get another record at all would be a privilege, though

I'd love to hear a new album from Alice In Chains as soon as possible. Black Gives Way... is really really friggin good. But, the only way the new incarnation of AIC will prove itself (I mean, beside live, because they kill it there) will be with another album that is better than BGWTB.

I'm talking about the editorial practice of adding words or even changing parts of exact quotes in interviews with the intention of making the statements more clear. I see this all the time now and it bugs the shit outta me because 9 times out of 10 the meaning is perfectly obvious. In some cases they even change the meaning of the original quote to suit what they think the person is saying. I don't see why this practice is becoming common place. A quote is a quote and the persons statement should be left at face value. Period.

Why you took offense to my post when it had nothing to do with you is beyond me. I guess you're just not too bright and get mad at anything your little pea brain can't absorb.

AWESOME! I liked BGWTB very much. I would say the overall majority of people seem to like it. As far as Mike Starr's absence.....They put out Jar of Flies without him which was arguably one of their best efforts and Mike Inez can be heard clearly throughout it. I loved the Tripod album too! Jerry Cantrell is the other half of the heart left in tact here. It does shine bright enough to sustain the name ALICE IN CHAINS!

We know it's you. If not, you're Mike's butt buddy. Seriously, I've been a fan since the debut and I even think "MIKE STARR" was awesome on those first three efforts : FACELIFT, SAP and DIRT. Therefore, you're argument about INEZ making them weak ass acoustic holds no weight. If you are MIKE STARR, then you are either not sober, stupid (because I know your history better than you do) or you've fried yourself beyond repair! I really hope this IS NOT Mike Starr here actually.

I was probably the biggest hater when it came to them replacing Staley and moving on under the AIC name but after 6 months of continuous spins of the album I will admit I was totally off base because not only was the album outstanding I personally feel it fits right into AIC's catalog.I see no reason why this line up should not continue to record and tour.As a AIC fan since 'Facelift' and a person who has seen them plenty of times throughout their career I am very happy to see this band where they are at this point and I am sure Layne would feel the same way.I look forward to the show later this month and to their future efforts.

And whoever started the whole "does Dr. Drew know you're using the computer" thing...hilarious! Go put on some Godsmack or some Nickelback and quit talking sh*t about one of the few bands out there with some integrity. Oh, and you want a memorable Mike Inez bassline? I agree that tripod was the weakest alice in chains album, but I don't think Mike Inez is the blame. In my opinion, the entire album had mixing issues. Some of this might be attributed to Layne's vocals. He certainly lost an emormous amount of power in his voice by the time tripod was released. They might have mixed the album differently in order to accommodate Laynes vocals. It's true that the bass is not as prominent on the tripod album, but Jar of Flies and Black Gives Way to Blue sound good to me. I'm hoping William gets to sing more on the next album. I think AIC played it safe by putting Jerry on lead vocals. Now that they have re-established themselves as a band to be reckoned with, we might see some experimentation. I certainly miss Layne, but I'm glad these guys are still making good music. I look forward to their future albums.
