16 Regt RA
Rapier, Ground to Air Missile.
Air Defence Regiment
We are an Air Defence Regiment and operate the Army's only low level air defence unit operating the highly sophisticated Rapier; a low level air defence missile system. It is a 24 hour, all weather guided missile system with the primary role of providing air defence protection against fast jets, helicopters, Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV), and cruise missiles. Rapier can fly missiles at three times the speed of sound engage two targets simultaneously. Rapier FSC is compact, mobile and transportable under slung below Chinook and Merlin helicopters and inside the C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. The system is extremely versatile, suitable for worldwide operations and capable of operating in arctic and desert environments. Rapier is currently deployed in the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic providing all year round protection. Our regiment also operates the counter rocket artillery and mortar system (C-RAM). C-RAM destroys enemy projectiles in flight fired at our bases on operations. We provide this protection to troops in Iraq and have specialists in Afghanistan.
