Rustic elegance: The First Nation hotel

24-hour room service: Hôtel-Musée Premières Nation, Quebec, Canada

Saturday, 17 April 2010

"Where are the tepees?" It wasn't a subtle question from our three-year old, but one that's possibly on the minds of a few visitors to Quebec's Hotel-Musée Premières Nations, given that this hotel has not only been built by the Huron-Wendat, one of Canada's pre-eminent First Nations, but also is largely owned and run by them too. This four-star hotel is all about celebrating indigenous North American culture, and is set in a wooden longhouse-style building constructed with traditional materials and techniques. It's also about refined-rustic elegance and modern comforts. There's not a wigwam in sight, but there is a gourmet restaurant and a hi-tech annex museum.

It proved a wonderfully lively evening – not only for the insight into a vibrantly emerging market but also for the go-ahead crowd I met. The Park group now has eight properties, and is a member of the Design Hotels consortium.

Grand design: the imposing entrance to the One&Only Cape Town

24-Hour Room Service: One&Only; Cape Town

Saturday, 3 April 2010

The visual drama is compelling. As you walk into this flamboyant property your eyes are drawn to a breathtaking view of Table Mountain framed in a three-storey picture window. Then a tremendous sense of space across the tall, wide lobby and lounge area becomes apparent, the main feature being a circular cocktail bar oozing glamour right in front of that window.
