WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber - Live Results and Commentary

102

As with every major show, BloodyElbow.com will be here to bring you live results and commentary for WEC 48: Aldo vs. Faber.  The live blog will start with the beginning of the Spike broadcast (at 9PM ET) so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.

As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.  With there being two sizable boxing events airing on HBO and Showtime tonight please refrain from boxing spoilers also.  If you want to talk about the boxing events make your way over to Bad Left Hook.

So again, join us for the show and share your thoughts as the event unfolds.

Alex Karalexis vs. Anthony Pettis - Round 1 - Karalexis misses with a leg kick early.  Jumping kick by Pettis hurts Karalexis and Alex is forced to clinch up.  Karalexis looks for the single but Pettis gets out.  Alex catches a kick and sweeps Pettis to the mat.  A little ground and pound by Karalexis and Pettis scrambles to his feet after eating a few.  One/two lands for Pettis, and again.  Kick caught by Pettis and he lands a right hand over top.  Sharp leg kick by Pettis.  Karalexis looking for another takedown off the single but Pettis gets away and just misses a head kick.  Pettis working big leg kicks that are hurting Karalexis badly and force him to switch to southpaw.  The round ends and it was 10-9 Pettis on my card.  Round 2 - Karalexis throwing bombs to close the distance, he gets tagged a few times coming in but manages to get a takedown off the double.  Pettis scrambles to his feet though and lands another big leg kick.  Another takedown by Karalexis.  Karalexis dives into the guard and gets caught in a deep triangle and is forced to tap out.  Anthony Pettis wins by submission (triangle choke), round 2.

The preliminary bout between Chad Mendes and Anthony Morrison made the air, Mendes submitted Morrison with an arm-in guillotine in the first round.

Leonard Garcia vs. Chan Sung Jung - Round 1 - Leg kick by Jung early.  Jung is trying to walk him down but his guard is wide open and he's dropping his hands when he throws.  Both men are unloading with reckless bombs.  Looks like Garcia got the best of the exchanges. Elbow by Jung and a blocked kick by Garcia.  Knees by Jung and he lands some big punches.  Head kick by Jung.  Left hand by Jung puts Garcia down.  Jung follows him to the ground and almost gets caught in an armbar.  Jung keeps dropping bombs from the top but Garcia manages to get back up.  They're trading big shots here.  Jung is getting the better of it here.  10-9 Jung.  That round may have cemented fight of the night for them. Round 2- Garcia looks to land early.  Jung lands a head kick.  Garcia huts him with a huge punch.  Jung is hurt bad but he keeps throwing and coming forward.  This is stupid levels of awesome, I don't even care that it's really sloppy.  Jung is bleeding a little now and they keep trading.  The crowd is really into the fight.  Head kick by Garcia.  Leg kick by Jung.  Hard jab by Garcia. Big shots by Jung.  Garcia throws a haymaker and Jung slips behind and takes him down.  Jung has the back with a body triangle.  They're back to the feet.  Huge left hook by Garcia.  Jung with a knee and a flurry of punches.  Garcia's mouthpiece goes flying.  they stop to replace the mouthpiece and then start throwing bombs again.  The round ends and it was 10-9 Garcia to even it up.  Round 3 - Hook by Garcia. Jung looks like the more gassed of the two.  Garcia working the leg kicks and movement here.  Jab by Jung.  Jung with a leg kick and jab.  Head kick by Jung misses. Jung leaps in with a punch.  Leg kick by Garcia. Body kick by Garcia and now Jung unloads with a flurry of punches that all connect.  Garcia fires back with a huge shot.  Leg kick by Garcia and now they're unloading with strikes and both men are landing.  They scream at each other and start throwing punches again.  Thirty seconds left int he fight.  Jung walking forward.  The fight ends and I scored it 29-28 Garcia but could see it going to either man.  That was a pleasure to watch.  Official scorecards: 29-28 Garcia, 29-28 Jung, 29-28 Garcia.  Leonard Garcia wins by split decision. Garcia says he broke his right hand in the first round.

Scott Jorgensen vs. Antonio Banuelos - Round 1- Banuelos lands a hard right early.  Banuelos with a nice combo now.  Jorgensen is getting beat to the punch here and is looking for single shots while Banuelos is landing combos.  Left hand lands for Banuelos now.  Banuelos with a big left again and Jorgensen drops.  Banuelos follows him to the ground landing some nice elbows.  Jorgensen almost grabs an armbar and Banuelos stands up.  Right hand by Jorgensen.  Head kick by Banuelos and then a spinning back kick to the head.  10-9 round easily for Banuelos.  Round 2 - Both men landing meaningful strikes early.  Banuelos landing leg kicks and a few left hands but Jorgensen is landing the better punches this round and it looks like he may have broken Banuelos' nose.  Jorgensen is doing a much better job of picking spots.  Right hand by Jorgensen lands hard and stumbles Banuelos.  Left hand by Banuelos but Jorgensen lands a few hard shots in return. Jorgensen hurts him and follows him to the ground. They're back to standing, Jorgensen landing again and it's 10-9 Jorgensen. Round 3 - Jorgensen lands hard early and Banuelos is pouring blood now.  Jorgensen is using much better head movement here.  A good amount of action this fight but mostly just more of Jorgensen landing.  Jorgensen drops him with a sharp straight punch.  Following him to the ground he tries a front choke and then takes the back.  Rear naked choke attempt and Banuelos turns.  Back control by Jorgensen and he continues to do a lot of damage.  Rear naked choke attempt by Jorgensen and Banuelos throwing punches back at him and the round ends.  10-8 Jorgensen for control and damage that round and I have it 29-27 Jorgensen.  Official Scorecards: 29-28 across the board for Scott Jorgensen.  Scot Jorgensen wins by unanimous decision.

Shane Roller vs. Anthony Njokuani - Round 1 - Roller comes forward quickly for the takedown.  Njokuani trying to avoid but Roller manages to get him down. Njokuani stands right back up.  Roller finally gets the takedown finished and he's in half guard.  Pass to full mount now.  Now to back control.  Njokuani defending the choke.  Back to the choke attempt with a body triangle.  Njokuani still defending.  Njokuani finally is forced to tap out to the rear naked choke.  Shane Roller wins by submission (rear naked choke), round 1.

Manny Gamburyan vs. Mike Brown - Round 1 - Right hand by Brown.  Gamburyan tries to flurry with hard shots but doesn't land.  Left, right combo by Brown just misses and a left in return from Manny.  Overhand right by Manny lands.Right hand by Manny and Brown goes down!  Manny follows him down and lands a flurry of punches and it's over.  WOW!  Manny Gamburyan wins by TKO (punches), round 1.

The prelim bout between Brad Pickett and Demetrious Johnson was shown.  Brad Pickett won the fight via unanimous decision.

Ben Henderson vs. Donald Cerrone - Round 1 - Leg kick early by Henderson.  One in return by Cerrone.  Henderson looks for the single leg now.  Switches to double unders and a knee to the body.  Knees to the leg by Henderson and now a few to the head.  Henderson really laying in with the knees to the legs.  Henderson gets the simple bear hug takedown.  They scramble and Henderson grabs a deep guillotine and Cerrone taps!  Ben Henderson wins by submission (guillotine choke), round 1.

Jose Aldo vs. Urijah Faber - Round 1 - Front kick by Faber and a two punch combo all of which miss.  Body kick by Faber grazes.  Faber looks quick early.  Leg kick misses for Aldo.  Leg kick lands for Aldo now.  Two punches come up short for Faber again.  Kick trips Faber and he's back up. Jumping knee misses for Faber, and a hook is sort.  Big body punch by Aldo.  Faber shoots and gets nothing.  Faber jumps in with a punch.  Right hook glaces off Aldo's face.  Aldo misses trying to go to the body again.  Big knee to the body by Aldo.  Front kick by Faber.  Faber finally lands with a body, head combo.  Right hand lands for Urijah.  Knee to the body by Aldo again and he is really working to the body this round.  Spinning back kick to the body by Aldo and a body kick afterward.  Close round but I'd give it to Aldo on the body work.  Round 2 - Faber trying to put together combinations but he's just not landing.  Nice hard leg kick by Aldo.  Faber tiwh a right hand and now a left.  Uppercut, left hook lands for Aldo now.  Faber tries to fire back and Aldo moves out of the way again.  Aldo keying in on the leg kicks this round. Right hand by Faber wasn't very solid.  Another big leg kick for Aldo.  Leg kick for Aldo again.  Jab, leg kick by Aldo and he slips Faber's counter.  Aldo's defensive striking is great this fight.  Another leg kick and Faber's leg is clearly hurting him.  Another leg kick and Faber is really hurting.  He's limping very badly.  10-9 Aldo again.  Round 3 - Faber avoids the first leg kick.  Hook to the body by Aldo.  Big leg kick spins Faber and he's having trouble standing at this point. Another leg kick. This is brutal.  Jab by Faber.  Flurry by Aldo and Faber is really trying but he's in a lot of trouble.  Body punch by Aldo again and a hard leg kick to follow.  Faber has nothing in his leg so he can't shoot for a takedown now.  Head kick by Aldo and a flurry of punches and Faber punches back to show that he's still here and in the fight.  Faber is slapping with his left. Huge leg kick and Faber wobbles on his leg.  Big body shot and a right to the hand after.  Aldo puts him down with another leg kick and then follows him to the ground.  10-9 Aldo again and this is so impressive.  Round 4 - The crowd boos mildly but one can assume it's because the local hero is getting brutalized.  Leg kick and Faber is hopping on one leg.  Faber switches stances and takes a big kick to the new front leg.  Aldo follows him down and mounts him. Now back control.  Faber spins out and gets back to standing.  Leg kick and Faber goes down again.  Aldo in Faber's half guard now.  Aldo to side control with the crucifix.  Aldo landing a lot of punches here.  Now some elbows.  Faber trying to buck and he can't get out.  Faber is taking a ton of punches here.  The round ends and it was a clear 10-8 for Aldo.  Faber is getting dominated in every area possible here.  Round 5 - Jab and a side kick by Faber.  Right hook by Faber. Faber shoots and can't get it down.  Faber with another body kick.  Aldo hasn't thrown anything this round.  This is weird.  Head kick blocked and a leg kick finally.  Aldo is just trying to coast to the cards I guess.  Body punch lands for Aldo and it hurts Faber.  Faber tries to shoot and gets nothing.  The fight and round end with Aldo landing a few punches to the downed Faber for another 10-9 round.  Official Scorecards: 49-45, 49-45, 50-45.  Jose Aldo wins by unanimous decision.

@fightmagazine “There are NO WEC logos on the gloves. Or anywhere in the arena for that matter. It feels like a fight card without an organization.”

I really thought they would just plaster WEC all over after you bought the PPV to gain recognition from casual fans who bought this just thinking UFC… but I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Maybe we just want a top 10 rushing attack and a hope that the QBs do a bare minimum acceptable job.

Lack of WEC b/c of contract?

Does their contract with VS means that they have exclusive rights to WEC fights? And due to Stanley Cup Playoffs, VS can’t have any prelims, and for them to be on spike, it has to be presented as non-WEC?

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
