Constituency Profile
In 1997 Sir Archie's 1992 majority of 22,060 was halved to 11,525. Following Sir Archie's retirement Chris Grayling, former management consultant, television journalist and producer, was selected as Conservative candidate. In the general election of 2001 he gained back some of the lost ground and in 2005 he won a 16,447 majority.
At the election, the seat gains three part-wards from Mole Valley, in exchange for one part-ward; and loses the ward of Preston to Reigate. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.
A part of Surrey very much within the commuter belt, Epsom and Ewell runs from Worcester Park in the north to Ashtead in the south.
Much of the area is contained by the M25, with the northern parts more urban than the greener south. Epsom possess a distinct identity originating in its famous wells and racecourse.
Over half the workforce is classed as being employed in professional, managerial or associated professional and technical occupations.
Though many of the working population commute, there are a fair number of corporations based in the constituency; the British engineering consultancy W S Atkins is based in Epsom itself.
