Louis Vuitton ad shoots for goal with soccer greats Pele, Maradona and Zidane facing off in foosball

April 30, 2010 | 12:44 pm

Louis_Vuitton_Soccer_ATRPost
Over here at All The Rage we're consistently in awe of Louis Vuitton's ability to land a mind-numbing assortment of stars from the global constellation of celebrity for its ad campaigns. Some of the more memorable ones featured Mikhail Gorbachev, Keith Richards and Catherine Deneuve (not in the same ad, mind you) and astronauts Buzz Aldrin, Jim Lovell and Sally Ride (very much in the same ad, and gazing up at the nighttime sky).

The newest print ad, which will appear in June issues of various international glossies, is another group effort -- and this time the luxury brand has managed to wrangle three of the greatest soccer (that's "football" to the rest of the world) players of all time for its Core Values campaign: Pelé of Brazil, Diego Maradona of Argentina and France's Zinedine Zidane -- just in time to capitalize on the mania surrounding the month-long 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, scheduled to kick off on June 11.

Shot by Annie Leibovitz in a Madrid bar called Café Maravillas, the shot captures the holy trinity of soccer engaged in a spirited game of foosball, while Zidane's double Z-emblazoned LV luggage lounges near the bar.

Tokidoki celebrates its new cosmetics line with Sephora

April 30, 2010 | 10:15 am

Toki Street wear and accessories brand Tokidoki is famous for its Japanese-influenced cartoon graphics. And now it's using its playful irreverence to brand a beauty collection.

The L.A.-based company hosted a luncheon at the Mondrian Hotel on Thursday to toast its new cosmetics collection created in partnership with ubiquitous beauty retailer Sephora. Guests (including Lisa Ling) were introduced to the line — which features eye-popping pigments encased in even more vibrant packaging — with the help of makeup artists holding court at a few small makeup stations.

"We had done a small collection with Smashbox in the past, and we've always wanted to have our own cosmetics line," said brand co-founder Poonah Mohajer. "I saw that Kat Von D had come out with a line with Sephora — the first time Sephora had partnered with someone — and I said, 'We have to call Sephora.' And they were like, 'Where have you been?' It was amazing."

'Sex and the City's' fashion-forward plots

April 30, 2010 |  7:00 am

Sex-and-the-city-2
In this weekend's Calendar section, The Times' Rachel Abramowitz chats up "Sex and the City 2" writer-director Michael Patrick King about some of Carrie Bradshaw's memorable outfits from small and big screen and the plots that they provoked, including this fun anecdote about the crazy layers of a ballet tutu our heroine wore in the TV show's finale:

And sometimes, if the clothes fit, then the show wears it, as when Field brought in the gargantuan, thousand-layer Versace gown that Sarah Jessica Parker wore in the TV series finale. King first caught sight of the sea-foam extravaganza in the fitting room, where Field announced, "This just came from Paris. It wants to be in the series." "I said, 'Pat, no,' " King recalls. "The first reaction is, 'That's too big. How would she even pack it?' " King started to walk away, but then stopped: "Let's make it a story point. She's all overdressed with nowhere to go. She gets jilted. I did a shot from the Eiffel Tower. I wrote lines around it."

For more fun facts about the show and movie costumes -- that white dress Carrie's wearing in the above photo from the film is Halston. Hmm ... interesting -- click here to check out Abramowitz's story.

Ebay launches a shopping and fashion page featuring top celebrity stylists

April 29, 2010 | 12:18 pm
Ebay stylist Ebay, the mother of all e-commerce websites, is ramping up its high-fashion offerings.

The cyber marketplace launched a new style hub on Monday, Fashion Voice, featuring shopping tips from style experts including celebrity stylists Annabel Tollman, Britt Bardo and Estee Stanley.

Tollman, who has styled Cynthia Nixon, Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Simpson, among others, is also the host of a new series of videos for the site that lends style advice to shoppers. The first video, "Find Your Vintage Era," sees Tollman giving shoppers advice on how to find and wear vintage using style icons through the decades as inspiration (i.e. curvy girls should try a Marilyn Monroe-esque '50s look).

But the bulk of Fashion Voice delves into the loves and passions of its stable of experts.

Each fashion pro has answered questions pertaining to their personal fashion ethos. Trend expert Karen Bard, for example, shares that her favorite eBay find ever was a Missoni throw blanket, and that her best-kept beauty secret  -- and one we're tempted to try -- is using "Vaseline on curled eyelashes instead of mascara."

MyShoes.com: the perfect fit for shoe shoppers on the go?

April 28, 2010 |  1:42 pm

Myshoescom Online shopping can be a stressful experience: Do you buy the last pair of booties on the site before the boss catches you surfing the Web or fret over finding a better deal elsewhere? MyShoes.com, which was launched in November, tries to alleviate buyer's or almost-buyer's remorse by offering a broader search so that you don't end up looking like, um, a heel.

With a setup similar to the aggregate travel site Kayak.com, MyShoes.com pulls sales and shopping details on the latest available styles in footwear from other websites and organizes the findings based on brands, styles, colors, heel heights and -- a personal favorite -- shoe features. Want to compare prices on leopard-print peep-toes with 1- to 2-inch heels between $75 and $100? Check off those search criteria and see what pops up.

Found the pair you want, but you're still uncertain because you've never used that seller's website? MyShoes.com tells you the seller's base price, shipping rates and whether it takes returns. As an added incentive to use the site versus your favorite online retailer, MyShoes.com has a partnership with sister site PromotionalCodes.com for added discounts.

We tested the site against big-fish Amazon.com -- which might have had a wider net for some search results, but actually had the same or a higher price tag when it came to the particular item. But one downside: Sorry, boys. This is an all-girls club, and it plans to stay that way. You men will just have to worship (at) our feet.

Macy's puts out a call to charities for its annual 'Community Shopping Day'

April 28, 2010 | 11:00 am

Macys Macy’s is looking for charities to participate in its annual “Community Shopping Day” charity shopping event, which has raised more than $5 million for local charities since 2004.

This year’s event will take place on Saturday, May 15, in 16 different Macy’s stores, including outposts at the Del Amo Fashion Center in Torrance, at the Westfield Fashion Square in Sherman Oaks, in Costa Mesa at South Coast Plaza, and at the Victoria Gardens shopping center in Rancho Cucamonga.

Here's how it all works: Macy’s donates shopping passes to participating charities, and the shopping passes are then sold by the charitable organizations for $10 each in the days leading up to the event. (The organizations keep 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the shopping pass.)

Pass holders can then redeem their passes at select Macy’s stores on May 15 to receive 20% off most men’s, women’s, kids and accessories merchandise, 10% off most home items and 25% off a single item (shopping passes are also now being sold at Macy’s stores through May 15).

Interested charities can register online here, or by calling (800) 251-1431.

Karl Lagerfeld produces an Eres-Chanel co-branded photo shoot

April 28, 2010 | 10:00 am

Eres Everything designer Karl Lagerfeld does is studied fervently by the fashion industry. Which was undoubtedly the thinking at Chanel's sister brand, Eres.

The French lingerie-and-swimsuit label tapped the ponytailed prince of fashion to shoot a series of photographs portraying its spring-summer 2010 collection in a fresh, cheeky light.

The resulting "fashion tale" -- which was conceived, staged and photographed by Lagerfeld -- features a comic strip-style series of photos showing a model looking like a modern pin-up rummaging through her closet for a few articles of Chanel prêt-à-porter. Ultimately, she reemerges dressed in Eres swimsuit and lingerie ensembles.

The photo series will be featured on the Eres website starting in May.

Paper suits him: Artist Greg Lauren (Ralph's nephew) crafts cool men's clothes from crumpled paper

April 28, 2010 |  6:12 am

Rage_alterations1
Greg Lauren’s journal entries have taken up residence in an empty storefront on Beverly Boulevard in West Hollywood. A Glen plaid suit jacket and matching vest worthy of Cary Grant -- but for the deep wrinkles -- stands in one corner, behind it the well-worn ringside robe of a prizefighter, hood bowed ever so slightly in weary defeat. Nearby are scuffed flight jackets, badge-covered Cub Scout shirts and the S-emblazoned torso of a Superman costume. They stand like gravestone rubbings or metal castings of the original garments, rendered in black, white, graphite gray and sepia shades.

The display filling the room might merit mention on its own as a kind of commentary on masculine archetypes, but it becomes a whole different creature when you start to realize that every single piece -- the down puffer vest and work boots, the stacks of neatly folded shirts and even the cylindrical buttons of the three-quarter-length toggle coat -- is a hand-sewn and painstakingly painted paper sculpture.

And when you finally make the connection between their creator, a 40-year-old artist with a Princeton degree in art history, and his uncle Ralph, every piece in the room takes on a very different meaning.

Armani suit meets 'Armani suite' at Dubai hotel

April 27, 2010 | 10:00 am

Armani_hotel

When fashion designer Giorgio Armani picked up a pair of scissors in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, it wasn't to cut a pattern for a suit jacket -- it was to cut the ribbon at a ceremony marking the opening of the world's first luxury hotel to bear his brand name -- the Armani Hotel Dubai.

The hotel consists of 160 rooms and suites on the fifth through eighth floors and the 38th and 39th floor of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, with levels nine to 16 home to 144 additional one- and two-bedroom private luxury apartments (dubbed "Armani residences"), all of which were designed by Armani himself and appointed in furnishings from his Armani/Casa collection.

Judging just from the above photos of the lobby, the place -- five years in the making -- has got to be a full-on temple to the maestro's minimalist luxury aesthetic, with the media materials waxing on about the "eramosa stone" floors (as near as we can determine, that term refers to a type of veined, brown limestone from Canada), zebra wood paneling, fabric-covered walls and an in-hotel Armani/SPA.

Of course there's abundant "shoportunity" at hand: In addition to eight restaurants, we're told there's a haute couture boutique showcasing the Armani Prive collection and fashion accessories (Armani/Galleria),  a confectionary serving up enough sweet treats to keep you from fitting into any of that Armani Prive (Armani/Dolci) and a flower shop where you can grab a Giorgio Armani-designed vase to go with that bouquet of flowers designed by Mother Nature (Armani/Fiori).

All we need to do now is persuade our editors to send us to Dubai Fashion Week.

Burberry launches a rain-themed capsule collection

April 27, 2010 |  6:09 am

Burberry We may not need a fancy trench coat in sunny L.A., but the souped-up versions in Burberry's new April Showers capsule collection may make you want to strike up a rain dance.

The limited-edition collection, which was manufactured for the brand's classics line Burberry Brit (not to be confused with the high-end Christopher Bailey-designed Burberry Prorsum collection), includes men's and women's apparel and accessories.

The collection's name is an homage to the British phrase "April showers," which signifies the end of winter and beginning of spring (before the spring season can bloom, it's believed in Britain that you must suffer heavy rainfall in April).

The heritage-style collection includes iconic-looking khaki trenches, shapely quilted jackets (in bright red and white) and princess-sleeved polo shirts with a peek-a-boo of Burberry's signature tartan on the button placards for women; and a vibrantly colored range of classic trenches for men, including an eggplant-hued model for the true modern dandy.

The sporty collection is now available in select Burberry stores (including in L.A.) and on burberry.com.

Your Stylist: The truth about this season's tie-dye trend

April 26, 2010 |  8:00 am

Resident Image stylist and market editor Melissa Magsaysay soothes your sartorial woes in the weekly Your Stylist blog column. Tiedye1

00130m Please settle this little dispute between me and my sister. She says tie-dye is "in" and has been trying to convince me that I should buy some tie-dye things to bring on vacation this summer. I don't believe her and don't see how I can wear it without looking like a high school hippie. LP, San Diego

I completely understand your hesitation to believe your sister, but trust me, she's not trying to set you up for fashion failure. Tie-dye is a huge trend that started with the neon, digital patterns on Proenza Schouler's spring/summer 2010 runway. It's looking so fresh this season, and you can definitely wear it without looking like a dread-locked, noodle-dancing deadhead or like you've been shopping in the junior's department. Rmink2032414999_p1_v1_m56577569831909908_254x500

Tie-dye has taken a surprisingly high-end turn, getting splashed onto everything from a basic T-shirt to leather skirts and bags. For your vacation, try this navy T-shirt with a simple white tie-dye pattern from Tory Burch. It would look great with slim, cropped white jeans and brown sandals or just thrown over a bikini. For something more festive that has "summer vacation" written all over it, this bright, multicolored bucket bag from Halston Heritage will brighten up a solid dress or casual ensemble of a tank top and jean shorts.

Rebecca Minkoff has a traditional tie-dye pattern covering her modern carryalls that could transcend the summer and be toted right into fall.

If you choose to wear tie-dye as a T-shirt or dress, stick to neutral tones such as white, black, tan or navy to avoid the teeny-bopper feel and always pair it with classic accessories or none at all, especially that old hacky sack.

You're wearing WHAT?? How not to go too sheer

April 24, 2010 |  9:01 am

Underwearjpg
When this major DON'T- PLEASE- PLEASE- DON'T arrived in our All the Rage inbox, we were shaken enough to realize that with white and khaki coming on strong for summer, we'd be shirking our duties if we don't remind you that there is a right way and a wrong way to wear light-colored clothing.

First of all, don't go too sheer, unless you actually want to provide a peek at what's underneath.

Second, don't go too tight, or you'll show off every lump and bump.

Avoid visible panty lines: Wear seamless undies or a thong. And make sure your lingerie is flesh-toned, not white, black, red, pink, orange or any other color. Got it?

"Flesh tones" vary, of course. The picture above was provided by MySkins, a lingerie company that offers 20 different flesh tones -- "highly specific shades of flesh tones," they say.

The best way to make sure you're not overexposed in white: Check every angle in a good mirror in  good light before you take one step out of the house, young lady!

Us Weekly names Hollywood style icons: Jennifer Lopez, Kelly Osbourne, Nikki Reed among them

April 24, 2010 |  7:01 am

Jenniferlopezjpg

Us Weekly celebrated its annual Hot Hollywood Style Issue on Thursday night with a big shindig at Drai’s Hollywood.

There were plenty of honors to go around, though we're not too sure about Jennifer Lopez being named "Style Icon of the Decade." Of course she looks great, but what about Sandra Bullock, Olivia Wilde, Madonna, Lady Gaga? And which decade, the one that just ended or the one that just started?

So many questions!

But it's all in good fun, and we are amused by some of the clever categories. Among them: Sheryl Crow was named “The Trendy Traditionalist"; Nicole Scherzinger, “The Dancing With the Stars Diva”; Molly Sims, “The Model Turned Mogul”; Kelly Osbourne, “The Punk Princess”; Anna Kendrick, “The New Showstopper”; Alyson Hannigan, “The Ex-Tomboy”; Sofia Vergara, “The Sophisticated Siren”; Nikki Reed, “The Colorful Coquette”; Katharine McPhee, “The In-Vogue Vocalist”; Jesse Williams, “The Individualist”; and Curtis Stone, “The Coy Cosmopolitan.”

But I must admit, my personal favorite: David Boreanaz, "The Debonair Leading Man." Yes!
