Track: A jewelry controversy in Pasadena

April 30, 2010 | 12:21 pm

The girls' dual meet between South Pasadena and Monrovia Thursday came down to the pole vault.

As explained in the Pasadena Star News, South Pasadena's Robin Laird cleared the needed height to deliver victory for her team, but she was immediately disqualified after Monrovia co-coach Mike Knowles pointed out she was wearing a friendship bracelet, which is not allowed in competition.

Rules are rules, but how come no one noticed the bracelet before she went up for her jump? Laird's disqualification gave Monrovia a 65-62 victory.

Where's Michael Josephson to discuss the ethics on this one?

Football: These head coaches are bringing in big bucks

April 30, 2010 |  6:42 am

Bill Redell and Jon Mack, the football coaches at Westlake Village Oaks Christian and Encino Crespi, are getting paid big bucks not only to coach but also attract attention and raise money for their programs. And they are delivering.

Redell is participating in a roast on May 23 to raise funds for a new synthetic football field. You can get eight tickets for $5,000 and hear Wayne Gretzky and Joe Montana take their shots at Redell.

Mack tops Redell in that he was able to auction off "Dinner with Coach Mack" for $3,500 and $3,200. Apparently, he's well known for his ability to cook spaghetti. Or maybe it's his wife.

Now, if only some City Section coaches could start coming off with some creative fund-raising ideas.

Baseball: Kennedy takes over first place in Valley Mission

April 29, 2010 |  7:11 pm

Granada Hills Kennedy pulled out an improbable 14-10 victory over San Fernando on Thursday to take over first place in the Valley Mission League. The Golden Cougars are 6-2, a half-game ahead of Sylmar (5-2) with two games to play.

The Golden Cougars trailed, 9-8, with two out in the top of the seventh when Andrew Hernandez struck out to seemingly end the game. But the ball got away from the catcher, and Hernandez reached first. Kennedy went on to score six runs in the inning to complete a two-game sweep of the Tigers. Hernandez earlier hit a three-run home run.

Sophomore Chris Mallon went three for four and Robert Gonzalez added a triple for the Golden Cougars, who are 11-12 overall but own victories over the top two teams from the West Valley League, Chatsworth and El Camino Real.

In the East Valley League, first-place Arleta (20-4, 9-0) defeated North Hollywood, 17-0, in five innings. Manny Guzman went four for four with a home run and triple. Andres Coll had five RBIs.

In the Marine League, San Pedro (19-4, 7-1) set up a first-place showdown with Banning for next Tuesday after a 12-1 win over Washington. Ronnie Galosic, Anthony Canjura and Danny Matienzo each had two hits. Banning (19-6, 8-0) defeated Carson, 15-2. Alex Sixtos threw four shutout innings with six strikeouts. Jonathan Hernandez was three for three with five RBIs.

In the Mission League, Ryan Brockett struck out three and threw a five-hitter as Encino Crespi (19-4, 6-2) defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 5-2. Crespi moved into a tie for first place with West Hills Chaminade. Ryon Healy drove in two runs. Los Angeles Loyola defeated North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, 10-3.

Football: Loyola is the place to be this summer

April 29, 2010 | 11:35 am

It looks like I know where I'll be on Wednesday nights starting in June _ Los Angeles Loyola, which is hosting weekly seven-on-seven passing competitions starting June 16 at 4 p.m.

The first week of teams include City Section powers Venice, Crenshaw and Carson. On June 23, Long Beach Cabrillo, Glendale Hoover and Venice play with the Cubs.

On June 30, it's L.A. University, La Canada St. Francis and Beverly Hills. On July 7, it's Westchester, Woodland Hills Taft and Fairfax. On July 14, it's Garfield, Crenshaw and Dorsey. On July 21, it's Compton Dominguez, Garfield and Hoover.

It's good that Loyola's new coach, Mike Christensen, is continuing the weekly competitions that began under his predecessor. And it's good that Crenshaw will be testing itself, because last summer's games helped prepare the Cougars for their memorable 2009 season.

Baseball: Ruiz, Paez deliver again for Bishop Amat

April 29, 2010 |  7:41 am

So much for the thinking if you're a multiple-sport athlete, you can't do two things at once. On Sunday, Rio Ruiz of La Puente Bishop Amat took a day off from baseball and played quarterback at the Nike football training camp at USC.

He was back playing baseball on Wednesday and belted a 400-foot three-run home run in the first inning to help the No. 1-ranked Lancers beat West Covina South Hills, 4-3, at Mount San Antonio College. Pitcher Paul Paez improved to 10-0, striking out 12.

Ruiz, a sophomore committed to USC, raised his batting average to .492.

Bishop Amat (21-2) will face No. 2 Lakewood on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Redondo in the championship game of a bracket of the Redondo tournament.

Track and field: Senior year over for Mater Dei's Woepse

April 28, 2010 |  9:27 pm

Michael Woepse of Santa Ana Mater Dei, the nation's top pole vaulter, said Wednesday his senior season is over after an MRI showed a partial tear of his hamstring.

"It's nothing too bad, but if I would try to jump, I could really tear it," he said.

Woepse said it will be three months before he might be back at full speed. He injured his hamstring at the Orange County championships last weekend. He said he intends to support Mater Dei's other pole vaulters.

Woepse has signed with UCLA and is considered the No. 1 pole vault recruit in the nation. He has cleared 17 feet, 6 inches, and was hoping to shoot for 18 feet.
