Ready the red carpet, Broadway. Tony Award winner Liev Schreiber and Golden Globe nominee Scarlett Johansson will star in Arthur Miller’s A View From the Bridge. Directed by Gregory Mosher, performances begin at the Cort Theatre on December 28, 2009, with opening set for January 24, 2010. The limited engagement runs for fourteen weeks. Additional casting will be announced shortly.

In A View From the Bridge, described as one of Miller’s most passionate dramas, Schreiber will play Eddie Carbone, a Brooklyn longshoreman obsessed with his 17-year-old niece Catherine, played by Johansson. When Catherine falls in love with a newly arrived immigrant, Eddie’s jealousy erupts in a rage that consumes him, his family, and his world. The play debuted on Broadway in 1955 and was most recently revived by Roundabout in 1997 in a production that won Tonys for Best Revival and Best Actor for Anthony LaPaglia as Eddie.

Schreiber, who had previously been rumored for the role, appeared on Broadway in the 2005 revival of David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross, a role which earned him a Tony Award. In 2007, he gave another Tony Award nominated turn in the revial of Eric Bogosian’s Talk Radio. His Shakespearean performances at the Public Theater and in Central Park include the title roles in Macbeth, Henry V and Hamlet, Iago in Othello and Iachimo in Cymbeline. He is known to film audiences for his work in flicks such as X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Taking Woodstock, Defiance, The Painted Veil, The Manchurian Candidate, The Sum of All Fears, Kate & Leopold, Sphere, The Hurricane and Hamlet.

New to Broadway, Johansson made her New York stage deut at Playwrights Horizons in Sophistry. The film starlet already has a long screen resume, including Lost in Translation, He’s Just Not That Into You, The Spirit, The Island, Girl with a Pearl Earring, Vicky Christina Barcelona, The Other Boleyn Girl and the upcoming Iron Man 2. The actress recently  released her debut album Anywhere I Lay My Head, followed by Break Up, a disc of duets with Pete Yorn.

Mosher has produced or directed nearly 200 plays at the Goodman and Lincoln Center theatres, on Broadway and in London’s West End. His long association with playwright David Mamet included twenty-three plays, including the original runs American Buffalo, Glengarry Glen Ross and Speed-the-Plow. Additional Broadway directing credits include Our Town, which earned him a Tony Award nomination, and Miller’s A Streetcar Named Desire.

The creative team for A View From the Bridge will include John Lee Beatty (Scenic Design), Jane Greenwood (Costume Design), Peter Kaczorowski (Lighting Design), and Scott Lehrer (Sound Design).

The revival will be produced by Stuart Thompson and The Araca Group. Additional producers include Jeffrey Finn, Sonia Friedman, The Weinstein Company and Olympus Theatricals.
